Good Friday Football
City Forwards Fail, Lack Of Punch At Reading - Many Chances Missed
Friday, March 25th 1932.
READING 2 EXETER CITY 0.
Exeter City opened their Eastertide programme on Good Friday with a match at Elm Park against Reading, when the Grecians were defeated by two goals to nil. It was once again the same old story regarding the Exeter attack, missed chances. The first half of the game produced keen, good football, both goals being visited in turn, although Reading were generally in the ascendancy.
Reading:- Mellors; Forster and Richardson; Darnell, Allan, and Barley;
Ritchie, Eaton, Palethorpe, Baggett, and McPherson.
Exeter City:- Davies; Gray and Miller; Clarke, Childs, and Barber; Armfield, Roberts, Whitlow, Houghton, and Doncaster.
The home team would undoubtedly have taken the lead earlier than they did, but for some brilliant goalkeeping by Davies. Twice in the first five minutes shots by Palethorpe and Eaton were put over the bar, while at the other end the crowd had a thrill when they saw a ball from Barber go skimming over the bar. Then a centre from McPherson was crashed into the Exeter net by Ritchie, and Davies was left helpless. Baggett scored Reading's second goal midway through the second half, Palethorpe and Ritchie having made the opening. Doncaster (twice), Houghton and Roberts all missed easy chances in this half, although most of the attacking was done by Reading. Whitlow was Exeter's best forward, but was poorly supported. There was a gate of 20,000, a record for Reading this season.
Southern League
EXETER CITY RESERVES v
TAUNTON TOWN.
Two thousand spectators at St James's Park saw a keenly contested Southern League match between the City Reserves and Taunton Town. Only one goal was scored, by Burrows for Taunton with a strong cross-shot fifteen minutes from the end. The game was marred by rough play, and Woodward was injured in a collision with the Taunton left back.
TAUNTON TOWN WIN AT EXETER
Superiority in attack enabled Taunton Town to snatch a victory in the Southern League at Exeter yesterday, the City Reserves being beaten by one goal to nil. Burrows, an Exeter native, but who has been with the Taunton club for some seasons, scored the deciding point with a strong cross-shot fifteen minutes after the start. Jones got his hands to the ball, but failed to prevent it entering the net.
Exeter were better served at half-back. Angus and Robinson putting in a lot of excellent work, while the home defence was sound, but the City forwards often finished their movements crudely, and Bristowe was rarely troubled, even though play settled in the Taunton half for long periods. S. Hurst, leading the Exeter line, proved himself a sharpshooter, and was unlucky with an excellent drive which hit the post. The City's forward play suffered through an injury to Woodward, the dashing inside- left, who had to have a wound over the eye stitched, and who was at outside-left for the second half. E. Curtis, the Taunton left-back, was stunned in the collision in which Woodward was hurt, and both players were off the field for 20 minutes. Curtis, with his head bandaged, resumed duty in his usual position
