Match 38
2nd April 1932
Norwich City (h)
Exeter City v Norwich City
April 2nd 1932.
EXETER CITY 3 NORWICH CITY 0.
Rain made the going heavy at St James's Park, but the weather improved before the match started. Only one change was made to the advertised teams, Williams, the former Merthyr Town player, being at inside left for the Canaries instead of Thompson, who is injured.
Exeter City:- Davies; Gray and Miller;
Clarke, Childs, and Barber; Whitlow, Purcell, Varco, Halliday, and Doncaster.
Norwich City:- Wharton; Wren and Smith; Robinson, Williamson, and Blakemore; Burditt, Bell, Brown, Williams, and Murphy.
Referee:- Mr W.L.Lewington, of Croydon.
Miller won the toss and Exeter faced the far end in the opening half. Davies was the first goalkeeper to handle the ball, clearing a high dropping shot from the Norwich right wing, sent in by Bell. Norwich adapted themselves quickly to the wet ground, and a smart intervention by Gray prevented Murphy from shooting at close range. The Norwich goal survived attempts by Halliday and Varco to gain an early advantage for Exeter, but Varco eventually opened the scoring from a nice pass by Doncaster, and the City leader beat Wharton for the second time in the closing stages of the first half.
Ten minutes after the interval Purcell, receiving from Barber, scored the third Exeter goal with a beautifully placed cross-shot from 25 yards, Wharton making no apparent effort to save. This was another substantial home victory for the Grecians, although Norwich, a very fine side, hardly deserved to lose by such a wide margin. Their defence, however, was weak on the right flank, and Exeter's first couple of goals resulted through this failing. Special praise is due to Varco for his speedy and accurate midfield play and the scoring of two goals against his old club. But for the fact that he put one shot against the post he would have done the "hat-trick."
