Brighton & Hove Albion v Exeter City
April 9th 1932.
BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION 1 EXETER CITY 1.
The Exeter City team and officials journeyed to London yesterday and stayed in town overnight. The day was grey and wet at Brighton, a thick drizzle driving along on a cold wind. The Goldstone ground was a trifle slippery on top, but as the playing pitch is elevated and drains quickly there was no mud. Roberts made a return to the Exeter team, playing at inside right with Purcell occupying his original position on the right wing.
Brighton:- Webb; Marsden and Brett (captain); Wilkinson, Mooney, and Smith; Farrell, Kirkwood, Attwood, Walker, and Wilson.
Exeter City:- Davies; Gray and Miller (captain); Clarke, Childs, and Barber;
Purcell, Roberts, Varco, Halliday, and Doncaster.
Referee:- Mr G.T.Gould, of London.
There were only 4,000 spectators when play started. Wilson opened the scoring with a goal for Brighton after three minutes, and Roberts equalised in twenty eight minutes. Three minutes before Exeter scored Walker, in tackling Clarke, was injured and carried off the field.
This was a very good performance by Exeter, although Brighton are also entitled to claim credit for avoiding defeat, considering the fact that they were without the services of Walker for the greater part of the game. The home side opened cleverly and scored their goal before Exeter had found their feet. After that the Grecians assumed command and were decidedly the superior side.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 1
TAUNTON TOWN 0
Although the weather was fine there was a poor attendance at St James's Park for the last match of the season in the Western League.
City Reserves:- Jones; Ditchburn, Baugh; A.Johnson, Angus, Robinson; Armfield, S.Risdon, Whitlow, Woodward, and Courtney. Taunton:- Bristowe; McLean, Curtis (E); Brace, Curtis (W), Woodward; Townsend,
Smith, Burrows, Clemett, and F.Dollins.
The City Reserves were early aggressive and within two minutes of the start they took the lead, Whitlow crashing a glorious left foot shot into the net past the helpless Bristowe.

TORQUAY UNITED OUT-PLAYED IN CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
Wednesday, April 13th 1932.
EXETER CITY 3 TORQUAY UNITED 0.
The superiority of Exeter City was very noticeable in their match with Torquay United in connection with the Devon Professional Championship at St James's Park on Wednesday evening, and the Grecians' success by three clear goals was the natural and appropriate outcome. Exeter City therefore will be Plymouth Argyle's opponents in the final at Home Park on a date yet to be fixed, and a first class contest should result from the clash between these old rivals.
Exeter City:- Davies; Gray and Miller (captain); Clarke, Childs, and Barber; Purcell, Roberts, Varco, Halliday, and Houghton.
Torquay United:- Millsom; Fowler (captain) and Webster; Hewitt, Anderson, and Smith; Birkett, Hutchinson, Clayson, Freer, and Waller.
Referee:- Mr V.Curtis.
From start to finish the Grecians seemed completely confident of their ability to win in comfort. They opened cleverly, but there were so many complicated moves in some of their forward work that the Magpies' defenders were able to nip in and clear, and there was a series of less artful but more dashing Torquay raids in which Clayson, Birkett, and Waller were the leading lights. Davies was his usual cool and efficient self in the home goal, and indeed gave a model display throughout, and with Childs in masterful mood at centre half the City quickly re-asserted themselves and remained "on top" to the end. Houghton, who played on the left wing, instigated most of Exeter's best moves, and Roberts was conspicuous for much clever play from the inside right position, and varying his tactics skilfully. Clarke was a fine supporting half-back.
Varco had a goal disallowed for offside, then in the twenty seventh minute the Torquay goalkeeper was beaten by a bouncing shot from Purcell. Childs, from a long centre by Purcell, scored the second goal with a powerful header, and in the second half Purcell improved Exeter's total with a well aimed cross-shot.
