Match 06
13th September 1933
Brighton & Hove Albion (h)
Wednesday,
September 13th 1933.
EXETER CITY 3
BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 0
It was a strange Brighton side that was seen at St James's Park on Wednesday evening. During the many years of their encounters with the Grecians, which go right back to the old Southern League days, it has been unknown for Brighton to descend to doubtful methods. It may be that they allowed themselves to become rattled because of the way the game turned against them, but most people would sooner watch the Brighton they knew previously. The evening was fine and warm and there were 6,000 spectators. The teams were:
EXETER CITY: Davies, Gray Hughes
Clarke Angus Webb Welsby Walters Whitlow Houghton Barnes
BRIGHTON AND HOVE: Wright Marsden Lumberg Wilkinson Brett Walker Thompson Farrell Attwood Smith Wilson
The Grecians won easily enough, by three clear goals, all obtained by Whitlow, resuming his "hat-trick" habits of last season. Exeter City, however, were not so well balanced as they will need to be if a serious effort towards promotion is to be sustained. There were weaknesses in the two inside forward positions, where Houghton was many degrees below his own standard, an unhappy "Happy" in fact. Walters made the mistake of hanging too far back, and his play was too slow and deliberate. Whitlow, who was the supreme artist in midfield and the alert and crack marksman near goal, scored in the 33rd, 43rd and 50th minutes.
