Match 12
21st October 1933
Third Division
Newport County v Exeter City
Southern League
Exeter City Reserves v Newport County Reserves

NEWPORT COUNTY
v. EXETER CITY
at Somerton Park, Newport

The Exeter City team, in charge of Messrs F.Parkhouse and J.Lake, travelled to Newport on the Great Western Railway excursion, being accompanied by nearly 500 supporters. Hardie's non-appearance was due to an injured toe, which had to be operated on during the week. Higgins, who was a Grecian last season, played inside right for the Ironsides and captained the team. Davies beat him in the toss, how ever, and chose to play against the wind in the first half.

Newport County. Emery; Hugh and Robinson; Jones, Jordan, and John; Green, Higgins, Taylor, Wooliscroft, and Thomas.
Exeter City. Davies; Gray and Miller;
Angus, Childs, and Clarke; Scott, Wrightson, Whitlow, Houghton, and Hurst.

Referee:- Mr E.R. Westwood.

Early play was very scrappy, the ball frequently being in touch on the Exeter right. Higgins, however, soon caused a thrill when he set off on an electrifying dash, and he swerved past two or three City defenders before he was fouled just outside the penalty area. He took the free kick himself and lobbed the ball into the goalmouth for Reynolds to head to Thomas, who headed over. Another free kick to Newport, taken by Wooliscroft, was fielded by Davies, the goalkeeper dropping to his left and catching the ball almost on the goal-line. The Grecians at length got into their stride, and Houghton dribbled almost to the goalmouth before passing to Hurst, who shot from ten yards was intercepted by Jordan. Hurst got away again on the left, but his centre, curling in the wind, dropped behind Whitlow. For the most part it was a poor first half, neither side displaying form that was anything better than moderate. Ten minutes after the interval Thomas advanced up the Newport left and beat Gray. He centred, and the ball swerved on the wind towards Davies, who misjudged its flight and touched it against the bar. It rebounded to Taylor, who from not more than three yards out, drove it home for the opening goal. This turned out to be the only goal of rather a poor game.
Result:
Newport County 1 Exeter City 0.

Consequent upon the return of Angus to the first team, Ditchburn resumed his old role at centre half in this afternoon's match for Southern League points at St James's Park.

Newport:- Boots; McLaughlin, Smith; W.Clarke, Clifford, Kitson; Baugh, Burgess, Millar, A.Clarke, Barklam.

After missing a glorious opportunity created by Risdon by shooting wildly outside Boundy gave Exeter City Reserves the lead with a hot drive from outside the penalty area, and altogether scored four of Exeter's eight goals. Risdon and Gumm (first half) and Poulter (2) in the second half were Exeter's other scorers. Millar (2) and Burgess got Newport's goals.
