Match 13
28th October 1933
Norwich City (h)

30th October 1933
Southern League
Llanelly (a)

October 28th 1933. EXETER CITY 2 NORWICH CITY 4.

Exeter's defence was to blame for the defeat in this vital match. The forwards received limited opportunities in the second half and made the most of the few chances which came their way. Houghton was easily the best attacker, while Poulter inclusion in place of Whitlow, who has an injured toe, did not weaken the line. The Exeter team, as a whole, must learn to battle throughout the game instead of only in the second half. As a result of this defeat the Grecians have dropped to sixth place in the League chart. Charlton Athletic, who scored six goals at the Valley without reply from our Devon neighbours, Torquay United, are top, and Norwich second.

Exeter City. Davies; Gray and Miller; Clarke, Angus, and Hardie; Scott, Wrightson, Poulter, Houghton, and Hurst.

Norwich City. Wharton; Hannah and Ramsay; Robinson, Halliday, and Lochhead; Warnes, Scott, Vinall, Bell, and Murphy.

Referee:- Mr F.Ratcliff, of London.

It was a sad blow to Exeter City's pride to see Norwich get away with the spoils, for not only was it their first home defeat this season, but it pegged them back in the promotion race. The game was fiercely fought from start to finish and the Grecians only went down after an heroic struggle. Norwich were the more bustling side and Exeter the more skilful. The battle between the two styles was exhillarating and skill won at first, Houghton putting Exeter ahead by converting a neat pass from Wrightson.
Exeter returned to the attack with vigour, Poulter being unlucky not to score, but in a counter-attack a lapse by Gray enabled the Norwich City Scott to equalise.
Half-time: Exeter 1 Norwich City 1.

Exeter resumed in the second half at a cracking pace and in the very first minute Poulter converted J.Scott's pass. Norwich immediately equalised through Vinall, who netted from Warnes's pass. The East Anglians maintained a steady pressure for some time, and Lochhead narrowly missed when well placed. Vinall, however, redeemed matters, scoring with a shot which went in off the post, after he had beaten the Exeter defence on his own. Norwich soon scored again, Warnes putting in Murphy's pass. Exeter crumpled badly toward's the end, but kept up occasional attacks. Wharton tipped J.Scott's drive over the bar, but was not troubled again till about a minute before the finish, when he failed to get down to Hurst's shot, which reduced Exeter's deficit. The "gate" was affected by a heavy downpour of rain which set in at lunch time and continued till about half-past two. The grandstand and covered accommodation on the popular side were packed, and the general attendance was in the region of 7,000.

  • Exeter City Reserves. The match between Llanelly and Exeter City Reserves was postponed on account of the Welsh side's interest in the F. A. Cup.

Monday 30th October 1933
LLANELLY 2
EXETER CITY RESERVES 1.

Exeter City Reserves were beaten at Llanelly by two goals to one. Llanelly's first goal was scored by Cochrane with a long shot which Chesters allowed to slip through his hands into the net. Chesters otherwise played a very sound game. Kennedy scored for Exeter. R.Boundy, on trial from Wallasey, played very well but the ball did not run kindly for him. Childs, Kennedy and Barnes were the pick of the Exeter team.
