Match 14
4th November 1933
Third Division
Bristol City v Exeter City
Friendly
Exeter City Reserves v Guildford
And
Schools Shield 2nd Round
Exeter Schools v Torquay Schools

November 4th 1933.
BRISTOL CITY 1
EXETER CITY 1.

In the hope of adding more thrust to the front rank the Exeter City selectors included Risdon at inside right in place of Wrightson. The Exeter team travelled to Bristol on the G.W.R. excursion, and arrived on the ground, Ashton Gate, about an hour before kick-off time. The weather was gloriously fine and the ground in perfect trim. At the start the attendance numbered about 7,000.

Bristol City. Scattergood; Roberts and Birks; Riley, Jennings, and Brinton; Homer, Loftus, Bowen, Heale, and Cainey.

Exeter City. Davies; Gray and Miller;
Clarke, Angus, and Hardie; Scott, Risdon, Poulter, Houghton, and Hurst.

Referee:- Mr A.J.Jewell, of London.

Exeter took the lead ten minutes before the interval. Poulter put Hurst through, and the Tipton man instantly brought the ball under control. He avoided Roberts's challenge and closed in to score with a neatly placed shot in the far corner of the net. Bristol rallied and Davies made sensational saves from Loftus and Bowen. Another save by Davies, from Cainey, resulted in the ball being put behind for a corner. The ball was dropped plumb into the middle by Cainey, and Davies turned it into his own goal to give the Bristolians a lucky equaliser. Exeter were disorganised in the second half through an injury to Angus, who went to outside right, with Clarke at centre half, and Scott right half. Play for a time was largely in Bristol's favour, but Miller was a cool head in the City defence, and Davies on many occasions the salvation of his side. Homer scored for Bristol, but the goal was disallowed by Mr Jewell on the grounds of offside, a decision which was greeted with hooting and catcalls from all round the ground. The referee came in for another round of booing when he refused Bristol a penalty for an incident near the Exeter goal. In the closing minutes Exeter broke away and Hurst shot into the net. The referee signalled a goal, but disallowed it for hands after an appeal by the Bristol players had persuaded him to consult one of the linesmen.

THE LEAGUE POSITION.

Exeter City fell into the lowest position (8th) they have occupied for the season in Division Three South. Norwich lead the section by three points.

EXETER CITY RESERVES
v GUILDFORD

Being without a League fixture today, Exeter City Reserves arranged an interesting friendly match at St James's Park with Guildford, a team which operates in the Eastern section of the Southern League. Boundy opened the scoring for the City Reserves within ten minutes of the kick off. Thom equalised with a sudden shot from 20 yards, but Boundy once more put Exeter in front. Both sides went all out to attack, and Kennedy (Exeter), Gombrell (Guildford), R.Boundy (Exeter) and McMurray (Guildford) registered goals alternately in the first half.

Half-time: City Reserves 4 Guildford 3.

Walters increased Exeter's lead early in the second half, and when Chesters punched out a header from Gombrell the ball was shot home from the rebound by McMurray. Further goals were added by Kennedy for the Grecians and by Maycock for Guildford.

Result:
Exeter City Reserves 6 Guildford 5.

English Schools Shield

  • The match was preceded by the English Schools Shield Round Two Cup tie between Exeter and Torquay Schools.
  • The Exeter team was:
Atkins (Central); Drew (Newtown), Bond (Central); Pate (St Sidwell's, captain), Hughes (Mint), Pugsley (Newtown); Harry (Ladysmith), McLeod (St Sidwell's), Hammett (Newtown), Davey (Heavitree), and Andrews (Central).

Torquay:- Crang; Ellis, Browning; Churchward, Rich, Ellacott; Slee, Harlow, Thompson, Andrews, and Sutherley.
Torquay had considerable advantage physically. Sutherley called out the best in Atkins with a strong cross shot which came in just under the bar. The Torquay backs often checked the Exeter advances through their greater speed, and Atkins had more opportunities to shine than his County rival.
Half-time Exeter 0 Torquay 0.

On resuming Torquay fed the powerful Sutherley, but Drew was able to check him several times. Just when it seemed that a goalless draw was in prospect Hammett ran through and touched the ball into the net to give Exeter victory by one goal to nil.
