Grecians Play Badly Except Defence
WING HALVES OUTPACED
Saturday, September 8th 1934.
Bristol City 2 Exeter City 0.
The Grecians were without Hurst and Clarke at Ashton Gate this afternoon. Neither of these players was fit, Hurst, injured in mid-week, having had three stitches inserted in his forehead, and Clarke having developed a severe cold.
The absence of Hurst was more or less expected. He was injured badly on Wednesday in collision with a Northampton defender and gashed his forehead so deeply that blood streamed from the cut. Under this handicap he played on pluckily to the end, but it was out of the question to risk him this afternoon. Bristol City introduced a new centre-half, Pearce, who is an Army International, and who was making his debut in a Football League encounter. The attendance numbered 7,000 when Poulter set the ball in motion, Miller having lost the toss.

The Grecians, who played in white jerseys, were very disappointing at Bristol this afternoon. The defence apart, the team did little right, and the chief cause of their defeat was the failure of the wing halves. McClure and Lewis were slow on the ball and slow in the tackle, being frequently outpaced by the Bristol forwards. Exeter's attack therefore suffered from lack of proper support, but even when due allowance is made for this, Poulter and the others in the Exeter front line revealed little craft and even less thrustfulness. Chesters, Gray, and Miller were the only mainstays of the team. They were a gallant trio and deserved much better support from their colleagues. Bristol won on their merits, and should have triumphed by more than two goals. The first goal was scored five minutes after the interval, when a corner from Cainey landed in the Exeter goalmouth, and Riley with a first time shot banged the ball into the top of the net. Immediately after this a golden chance fell to Exeter, but with all the goal to aim at Scott blazed the ball high over the bar. Twenty minutes after the restart Riley scored again for Bristol City.

Tierney scored after ten minutes but Barry equalised with a penalty, Ward netting the ball from the spot after Smith was adjudged to have handled. McArthur scored for Exeter and again Ward equalised with a kick from the penalty spot, Barnes this time having handled. In the second half Risdon and McArthur (2) scored for Exeter and Ward for Barry, from yet another free kick, although no infringement had been committed.
