DEVON CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH AT ST JAMES'S PARK

Torquay All-Out :- Not So Much City

DAVIES'S TRAGIC MATCH: STEELE CLEAVES EXETER'S DEFENCE

Exeter City 2 Torquay United 4.

Better knit in defence and more purposeful and direct in attack, Torquay United deserved their victory over Exeter City in the first round of the Devon Professional Championship at St James's Park on Wednesday evening.

EXETER CITY
Davies
Gray W.Smith
Clarke Angus Lewis
Scott Wrightson Hurst McArthur Tierney

TORQUAY UNITED
Maggs
Gregg Dickenson
Jones Millington Lievesley
Steele Beedall Stabb Hutchinson Morgan

Opening play proved a false guide to the ultimate result, for the City scored, through Hurst, within a minute of the start. Then came a remarkable goal. A half-hit shot from a position almost on the touch-line came in from Steele. Angus could have easily kicked the ball away, but he left it to Davies, who, to the consternation of spectators and players alike, allowed the ball to go past him and into the net. Torquay's second goal was almost as bad, Hutchinson firing the ball into an empty net after Davies had made a futile effort to clear. Steele, who had the beating of Smith every time the pair came into conflict, paved the way for the third goal to Torquay United, scored by Stabb. In the second half Wrightson hit the United crossbar, but Steele went one better, beating Davies with a long shot which the City goalkeeper should have saved. Hurst scored Exeter's second goal.
