CITY'S WORST FORM OF THE SEASON
Lucky to Escape So Lightly Against Luton Town

LEWIS SHOWS FORWARDS THE WAY TO SHOOT

Exeter City 1 Luton Town 2.

The smallest crowd of the season, just over 4,000, saw Exeter's worst display of the season at St James's Park, where Luton Town were the visitors today in a Football League match.

LUTON TOWN

A goal scored by T.Bell from the rebound of Stephenson's header, which struck the crossbar, just before the interval gave Luton the lead, which they just about deserved on the general run of the play.
Exeter were the livelier of the two teams at the start, though their best chance of scoring was lost through J.Scott getting offside. Coen saved confidently from McClure and Hurst. Luton frequently attacked, but their finishing left a lot to be de sired, and did not compare favourably with their approach work, which was excellent. Stephenson, who was signed by Luton from Preston North End with a view to improving the attack, twice fired the ball wide from easy positions, but Exeter had a slice of good luck when a shot by Rennie rattled their crossbar. In an isolated Exeter attack Tierney got through in promising style, but failed to beat Coen with his final shot. Luton resumed strongly and Chesters, in rushing forward to stop T. Bell, almost booted the ball into his own net. Luton, a smart and skilful team, soon took complete command, and a great shot by T.Bell from Martin's centre narrowly missed the goal. Exeter City were in utter confusion when Stephenson dribbled through, coaxing the ball past one man and then another before crossing to T. Bell, who with Smith hesitating to tackle, crashed a fierce shot into the net from twelve yards' range. Coen saved under the bar from Wrightson, then Hurst from almost on the goal-line made the worst miss of the game by somehow mana ging to get the ball over the bar instead of under, which looked far easier. Eventually Lewis showed the forwards the way to get goals with a crashing drive from fifteen yards which very nearly shattered the net.

SOUTHERN SECTION CUP TIE AT ST JAMES'S PARK

Exeter City 4 Aldershot 0.

Interesting experiments were made by Exeter City, holders of the Southern Section Cup, in their second round tie with Aldershot, at St James's Park this afternoon. Exeter together with several other clubs had a bye in the first round, in which Aldershot created a big surprise by defeating Charlton Athletic 6-1, Waterston, their centre-forward, getting four of those goals.

Aldershot kicked off before about 1,000 spectators, and the City made a sensational start, taking the lead in the first minute. Webb and Poulter started the move from which J.Scott forced a corner, and from the flag kick Tom Scott headed a nice goal. Having tasted blood the Grecians again raided strongly, and the ball, which looked to be going over the line, was captured by Dryden. He hooked it inwards and Dudley in turn passed to the new skipper, who took careful aim and completely beat Robb with one of the best shots seen at the ground this season. Exeter were two up in six minutes, and people were wondering why they can't do this sort of thing on Saturdays. The Aldershot defence was very unsure of itself, and Dryden was scarcely challenged when he ran through to score Exeter's third goal from close range. Dryden also scored the fourth goal, from a pass by T.Scott, in the second half.
