Match 13
27th October 1934
Brighton & Hove Albion (a)

Southern League
Bath City (h)

Saturday, October 27th 1934. CITY'S HEAVIEST DEFEAT FOR YEARS:
Six Nil at Brighton
WHOLESALE COLLAPSE AFTER A GOAL-LESS FIRST HALF

Brighton and Hove 6
Exeter City 0.

Stern semi-final contests in last season's Southern Section Cup competition were recalled by Exeter City's visit to Brighton. The clubs met three times before a definite result was reached on the Goldstone Road ground and the City were able to advance to the final.

HEAVIEST DEFEAT

Today was a different story, however, for Exeter sustained their heaviest defeat for a number of years. After holding their own in a goal-less first half the Grecians collapsed in a startling fashion after the interval and were routed to the tune of 6-0. There was weakness in all departments, and the defence, with the sole exception of Gray, was very uncertain. T.Scott played well in the first half, but so consistently did Brighton dominate the game afterwards that nothing was seen of the Exeter forwards in the second half. It is apparent that further changes must be made, for the team which did duty today will not be good enough to lift Exeter out of the rut into which they have fallen.

Brighton:- Thomson; King, Jones; Darling, Mooney, Walker; Jepson, Farrell, Brown, Smith, Wilson.

Exeter City: - Chesters; Gray, Angus; McClure, Webb, Clarke; J.Scott, T.Scott, Poulter, Lewis, Dryden.

Referee:- Mr E.W.Vokes, of Bath.

Brighton should know their own breezes! But it was not until the second half that they adapted their play to the boisterous and unpredictable wind which prevailed at the Goldstone Ground. They failed to find the net in the first half, although making several clever approaches in which Farrell was usually the most conspicuous of the forwards. After the change of ends Brighton emphasised their first-half superiority by scoring frequently and mostly with ease. Within two minutes of the resumption a miskick by Webb and another by Angus gave Jepson the opportunity of netting a simple goal, and a minute later Brown was completely unmarked in front of the Exeter goal, and his shot, taken almost at leisure from twelve yards, left Chesters helpless.

MORE GOALS.

The veteran Wilson was well in the picture, and his dazzling and intricate dribbling, his quickness on the ball, and his ability to land a centre exactly where he wished the ball to go, had a great deal to do with the flurried and anxious state of the City defence. Brown put through the third goal following a scrimmage under the Exeter crossbar and Walker shot the fourth. Brighton continued to press heavily, and Smith scored two goals in quick succession to complete the rout.

Southern League
EXETER CITY RESERVES 5
BATH CITY 2.

For this afternoon's meeting with Bath City, in connection with the Southern League, at St James's Park, the City Reserves were led by R.Gibbs, a promising newcomer from St Blazey, Cornwall.

City Reserves: - Davies; Lock, W.H.Smith; Risdon, Keefe, Dudley; V.Hoyle, Wrightson, R.Gibbs, McArthur, Tierney.

Bath City:- Prout; Howson, Sambridge; Hall, Hicks, Lloyd; Coward, Prentice, Munday, Coombes, Thomas.

Despite facing a strong wind and the sun Exeter Reserves forced the pace, and from Hoyle's centre, driven squarely across the goal, Gibbs's shot was deflected into the net by Howson. Wrightson, accepting a pass from McArthur, increased the City's lead with a powerful low drive out of the reach of Prout. Midway through the second half goals by Wrightson, Munday (for Bath) and Gibbs followed one another in quick succession. Gibbs then scored for Exeter and Thomas for Bath.
