CITY'S SENSATIONAL CUP VICTORY
Second Defeat of the League Leaders at St James's Park
CHARLTON'S DEFENCE CRACKS BADLY IN SECOND HALF
Exeter City 5 Charlton Athletic 2.
Not even the most ardent and optimistic supporter of Exeter City would have hoped for such an amazing and convincing victory at St James's Park as the Grecians gained in the replayed Cup-tie (first round) on Wednesday afternoon. Exeter thus visit Yeovil and Petters United in the second round. Members of the Somerset team and supporters were present to see the City's triumph, and it must have been an eye-opener for the visitors from Yeovil. After none too promising an opening, despite the fact that they scored first, the Grecians riddled the League leaders' defence to the tune of four goals in the second half to spring the most sensational result of the day's five Cup replays. The Londoners' defence cracked badly and the City's attackers ran riot. The scorers for the Grecians were T.Scott (2), Hurst, Wrightson, and J.Scott. Wilkinson netted both Charlton's goals. Dull weather prevailed, but conditions were infinitely better than those which ruled at the Valley on Saturday, when London was shrouded in a thick fog from end to end.
Charlton brought down thirteen players but decided to field the same team as was played on Saturday. Exeter also kept to their same eleven.
The attendance was 7,400, and receipts £475.188.0.
