Match 19
9th December 1933
Luton Town (h)

Western League
Torquay United Res.(a)

December 9th 1933.
EXETER CITY 4
LUTON TOWN 2.

The weather at St James's Park today was dry but bitterly cold, and grey skies and the absence of sunshine made the conditions somewhat uncomfortable for the spectators. The ground was very hard with a thin covering of frost. The attendance at the start was below 4,000, the smallest for many years at a first team League match.

Exeter City. Davies; Gray and Hughes; Clarke, Webb, and Hardie; Whitlow, Wrightson, Poulter, Houghton, and Hurst.

Luton Town. Harford; Kingham and Mackey; Brown, McGinnigle, and Fraser;
Lawson, Tait, Rennie, Hutchinson, and Anderson.

There were plenty of thrills in the match at St James's Park this afternoon, for after losing an early goal the City recovered, and by the interval had established a lead of 3 to 1.

Luton began with a rush and Rennie scored a goal for them in the fifteenth minute. The ball rebounded from Gray, and Rennie drove hard into the net from about three yards. Straight from the kick off Poulter went through on his own equalised. His shot, low, fast and well aimed, hit the back of the net before Harford was alive to the danger. There was no holding the City after this, and five minutes later a perfectly placed centre by Whitlow was deftly glided into the net by Poulter's head. These praiseworthy efforts of Poulter aroused the enthusiasm of the crowd, and the spectators loudly applauded Exeter's centre forward, who is a wholehearted trier and a vastly improved player. Luton fought back gamely, but found themselves in further arrears when Hurst netted Exeter's third goal. Luton played with plenty of confidence in the second half but the City were clearly the better side. Luton got an unexpected goal in the eighteenth minute when Rennie converted a pass by McGinnigle, but generally their forwards were held in check by Webb, Gray, and Hughes.

Hurst closed in to the middle and scored another goal to give Exeter a comfortable lead, but Luton refused to admit defeat, and continued to fight the game out gallantly until the final whistle.
