EXETER CITY BREAK THE NEWPORT BOGEY

MCARTHUR AT INSIDE LEFT FOR T.SCOTT

Six Goals Would Not Have Flattered the Grecians

Newport County 1 Exeter City 3.

Glorious weather prevailed, but there were no more than 3,000 spectators present when Miller won the toss. McArthur came into the team at inside-left, where he deputised for Tommy Scott, who has a strained knee. Poulter still being un fit, Hurst continued to lead the attack, with Dryden, Exeter's best forward on Boxing Day, retaining the outside-left berth. This match was McKenzie's last in the Newport colours. The old Argyle half-back is repairing to Plymouth to take over licensed premises.

The Grecians broke the Newport "bogey" in no uncertain manner today. A goal behind at the end of nine minutes, Exeter then dominated the exchanges to such good purpose that they won very worthily in the end by three goals to one. The City forwards, who played sparkling football, had a day out against a confused defence and slow half-backs. The wonder was that Exeter did not win by a far larger margin. With ordinary luck in finishing they would have scored six or seven goals. There was no weak spot in the City team, and every man pulled his weight. Newport went ahead in nine minutes when Bird, who was dashing through, was pulled down by Webb inside the penalty area. Mr Reeve immediately awarded a penalty, and Bird scored from the spot. Hurst, receiving from J.Scott, equalised in the twentieth minute. Exeter practically toyed with the opposition in the second half and Dryden secured them the lead with a cross-shot from Hurst's pass. Wrightson from J.Scott's pass, scored the third goal five minutes from the end.

NEWPORT COUNTY RESERVES 3.

At St James's Park this afternoon in a Southern League match with Newport County Reserves Exeter City experimented with the Chudleigh schoolboy international trialist, Chris Sutherley, at outside-left and Risdon at centre-forward.

City Reserves.
Chesters; Lock and Lewis; McClure, Keefe, and S. Barnes; V.Hoyle, Dudley, Risdon, Tierney, and C.Sutherley.

Newport Reserves.
Williamson; Cook and McLaughlan; Davies, Parsons, and Lawson; Appleby, Reynolds, Litherland, Paget, and Perks.

Had not Tierney over-run the ball Exeter might have scored in the first minute. As it was, Exeter's clever opening play was not maintained, and Litherland scored for Newport. Some typical Tierney brilliance delighted the crowd and had the Newport defence puzzled. From one of his moves Barnes drove the ball across the face of the goal and Hoyle netted. Risdon then kicked over the bar from almost underneath it, and Davies, in a rare Newport breakaway beat Chesters with a long shot. Risdon was not happy at centre-forward and Sutherley out of his class in Southern League football. Litherland broke away and scored Newport's third goal with a low shot which Chesters misjudged, and Risdon got a goal for Exeter.
