CITY DO THE DOUBLE WITH ONE GOAL TO SPARE

WRIGHTS ON THE BEST FORWARD: DEFENCE UNCERTAIN

Last Minute Goal by McArthur Wins the Match

Exeter City 4 Southend United 3.

The Grecians, winners by the odd goal of seven, completed their first "double" of the season, but they had to fight desperately hard to clinch the issue, after looking comfortable winners at threequarter time. Though not a great game from the point of clever football there were plenty of thrills, and the amazing way in which the game fluctuated kept the interest sustained. Four thousand spectators were present at the start. The weather was dry but very cold.

The City made a promising start, launching attacks on both the wings and Scott forced a corner. From the flag kick however the ball was passed back to Clarke, who shot yards over the bar. He did better a minute later, when he put a nice pass through for Wrightson to take in his stride and test Moore with a rising shot, which the goalkeeper saved close to the post. A quarter of an hour from the start Southend took the lead, Deacon from Barrow's crossfield pass shooting past Davies at close range. Severe pressure by the City revealed many weakness in the oppo sing defence, and Hurst and Scott paved the way for Wrightson to score the equaliser.

SECOND HALF.

After Stevens had hit the post with only Davies to beat Hurst gave Exeter the lead and immediately afterwards increased it. The City now appeared to have the game well under control, but instead they went to pieces. The defence became uncertain, Gray badly mistiming his tackles and Miller being too slow. Defensive errors were the cause of a remarkable and successful rally by Southend in which Stevens scored two goals. Right at the end Dryden centred and McArthur headed the ball into the net to win a dramatic victory.

LOVELL'S ATHLETIC 2
CITY RESERVES 1.

Exeter Reserves were slow in settling down at Newport in this Western League match, and for some minutes penned in their own half. Eventually they woke up, however, and the position was reversed. Midway through this half Poulter opened the scoring with a smart shot.

Lovell's: Boots; W.Hillman, J. Wheeler;
Hugh, G.Wheeler, P.Roose; Hardwick, A.Clark, W. Williams, Macgill, Hiles.

City Reserves: - Chesters; Lock, Smith; McClure, Keefe, S. Barnes; L.Brooking, Risdon, Poulter, Dudley, Tierney.

Referee: Mr McIlwaine.

Lovell's took the honours after the interval, though Lock and Smith defended stubbornly for the City Reserves. A long dropping shot from Hardwick entered the Exeter net, the flight of the ball being misjudged by Chesters. Lovells scored again in the closing stages, winning as stated.
