Exeter City v Southend United

Christmas Football
EXETER CITY v SOUTHEND UNITED

The Grecians, who were in splendid form against Torquay United on the Saturday before Christmas, continued in this vein on Christmas Day at St James's Park, when they defeated Southend United by two goals, scored by Poulter and Wrightson, to nil.

Exeter City. Davies; Gray and Miller;
Clarke, Webb, and Hardie; Scott, Wrightson, Poulter, Houghton, and Hurst.

Southend United. Whitelaw; Robertson and Bateman; Dixon, Wilson, and Morfitt; Barnett, Jones, Stevens, Lane, and Clenshaw.

The nine thousand spectators were pleased with the form shown by the Grecians, and whilst the side did not dominate the exchanges to the same degree that they had done against Torquay, this was no doubt due to the fact that Southend played much better football than that expected of a team nearly at the bottom of the Southern Section. Poulter's goal, obtained in the first half, was cleverly obtained, the centre-forward snapping up a through pass from Wrightson, then going on to beat White law with a low shot from inside the penalty area.

WRIGHTSON'S HEADER.

The second goal, which came after the interval, was the outcome of a free kick to the Grecians just outside the Southend penalty area. Wrightson, running in to meet Hardie's shot, scored with a perfectly timed header. Exeter came near to scoring on other occasions, when first Poulter and then Hurst struck the Southend cross-bar. With the diminutive Jones as elusive as ever, and with Clenshaw losing none of his speed and directness despite the passing of the years, Southend were neat in approach, but generally their attack was held in check by a rock-like Exeter defence in which Miller and Webb in particular were the shining lights.

Result:
Exeter City 2 Southend United 0.
