TORQUAY UNITED 3
EXETER CITY 0

Exeter City made one alteration from the side which beat South end United last week. Miller, below par since his injury, was again replaced by Smith, whose robust and dashing methods were expected to be more useful than Miller's polished style in an encounter of the usual Torquay v Exeter type. The weather was fine, and there was a seasonal frosty nip in the air. Clarke won the toss and Torquay kicked off from the far end.

EXETER CITY.

Torquay at once made headway, and Smith checked Morgan at the expense of a corner, which was cleared by Webb. Davies saved a shot from Protheroe and another from Hutchinson.

CITY MISS AND TORQUAY SCORE.

The Torquay goal escaped sensationally when Hurst with only the advancing goalkeeper to beat, shot weakly past the post. Then Morgan, who was proving too much of a handful for Smith, used his speed to get past the Exeter defence. He sidestepped Angus and dropped the ball in nicely for Flavell, who headed strongly into the Exeter net. The City were rattled, and badly at that.

TORQUAY SUPERIOR.

The Magpies continued to play the better football. They were the tacticians, and Exeter's indecision and aimless passing were of woeful comparison. Following another fast assault Flavell again scored, but was given offside. Dryden put in a couple of shots which lacked power, Maggs being quite capable of dealing with them. Two offside decisions, each time against Hurst, stopped Exeter's most promising moves, and half-time arrived with the score:
TORQUAY 1 EXETER CITY 0.

Exeter's half-time reverse was exactly as it should have been. With the possible exception of Dryden the forwards had not been able to show anything like the same degree of penetration that has characterised their recent matches.

HEART BREAKING!

J.Scott in fact must have had a task which was a little short of heart-breaking, for the backing he received was negligible. Most danger was threatened from the Dryden quarter, but he often put his centres behind the goal.

CROSS BAR RATTLED.

Hurst was baulked by Gregg in the act of shooting, then Welsh, going through at speed, was brought down by Angus, and the free kick taken by Flavell rattled the City's crossbar with Davies a helpless onlooker.

BLOW TO TORQUAY: AND CITY.

Misfortune befell Torquay when they lost Beedall with an ankle injury, but Protheroe, who took his place, was instrumental in the obtaining of the Magpies' second goal, 28 minutes from the start of the second half. He sent a ground pass through to Morgan on the opposite wing, which Smith was not prepared for, and Morgan, cutting in at a great speed crashed the ball into the net, Davies falling too late.

TORQUAY'S THIRD GOAL.

Play of an up and down nature prevailed for a long period, then with five minutes to go Exeter were plunged further in arrears. Although limping badly on the left wing Beedall was just able to slip the ball over his head and into the goalmouth. Davies unfortunately had vacated the goal to check Beedall and Flavell's superior height enabled him to get the better of Webb in a jump for the ball. It was an easy goal, but one to which Torquay were thoroughly entitled. Displaying all the initiative, Torquay fully merited their 3-0 success over Exeter City at Plainmoor. Exeter never recovered from their unsteady start, but their stirring play during the early part of the second half should have brought them perhaps one goal. Torquay's performance must be regarded as creditable in view of the fact that for nearly threequarters of the game Beedall was virtually a cripple, but they would not have kept their goal intact if Exeter's finishing had been a little more resolute.

CITY RESERVES v
TORQUAY RESERVES.

WESTERN LEAGUE MATCH AT ST JAMES'S PARK.

For the game with the Magpies Reserves this afternoon, the City Reserves experimented with two young amateurs, both of whom have been prominent in junior football. They were R.Dunstan, inside right, from St Blazey, Cornwall, and R.Ebdon, centre-forward, from Ottery St Mary, whose services are said to have been sought by Plymouth Argyle. The defence, with Miller at left back, was a strong one.

City Reserves.
Chesters; Lock and Miller; Risdon, Keefe, Lewis; V.Hoyle, R. Dunstan, R.Ebdon, Dudley, and Tierney.
Torquay Reserves. A.W.C. Bayes; Hunt and Tepper; Dickenson, Millington, and Pickersgill; Davies, Lowery, Tannahill, Clarke, and Knott.

Exeter attacked on the left and from Dudley's pass Dunstan put in a hard cross-shot which Bayes saved. Millington sent a long pass down the centre from which Lowery hit the crossbar with Chesters out of position. Chesters saved finely from Clarke, and at the other end Bayes ran out of his goal to clear from Ebdon.

EBDON CROWNS TIERNEY'S WORK.

The City opened their account after half an hour, Ebdon netting after Tierney had cleverly tricked Hunt and passed for Ebdon to head the ball into the net at point-blank range. In the second half Hoyle and Dudley scored further goals for the City, but the feature of the game was the display of Bayes, the veteran goalkeeper, who has not played for several years.
