Match 23
26th December 1933
Southend United (a)
BOXING DAY MATCH AT SOUTHEND
Exeter City's Christmas programme, which had opened so well, ended on a disappointing note on Boxing Day, when the team was defeated by three goals to one in the return match at Southend United.
SOUTHEND'S NEW PLAYER
Mustard Puts Life Into the Attack Against Exeter
Southend 3-1 Exeter
Both sides made changes from the game at Exeter on Christmas Day, and Southend supporters were surprised to find that at outside-right Mustard, formerly with Queen's Park Rangers and Burnley. was partnering Jones instead of Barnett
Mustard was signed on on Saturday and by his general display gave the impression that he had been regularly playing in the home forward line. He fitted in with Stevens and he paved the way for Southend's second goal with a perfect short pass after beating Hardie and Miller.
The game was played on a rain-soaked pitch and during the first half there was so much fog that the teams did not go to the dressing rooms at half-time.
Southend were attacking for three parts of the game and were more at home with the slippery conditions, their forward combination, in fact, was far better than it has been this season. Exeter's fault was that they kept the game too close, but nevertheless Hurst, Whitlow and Scott were often a source of danger to Whitelaw.
Lane and Stevens (2) scored for Southend and Poulter for Exeter
Southend United. Whitelaw; Robertson and Bateman; Dixon, Wilson, and Morfitt; Mustard, Jones, Stevens, Proudfoot, and Lane.
Exeter City. Davies; Gray and Miller;
Clarke, Webb, Hardie; Scott, Whitlow, Poulter, Houghton, and Hurst.
This cannot be considered quite good enough, for despite their two home wins the City have made no advance in their quest to attain the leadership of the League and the consequent promotion to follow.
