Match 26
20th January 1934
Charlton Athletic (h)

Western League
Lovell’s Athletic (a)

EXETER CITY 2
CHARLTON ATHLETIC 0.

Saturday, January 20th 1934.

Charlton Athletic met with misfortune at St James's Park, when they lost the services of their goalkeeper, H.Wright, who was injured in a collision with Hurst 25 minutes from the end. After leaving the field for a time he returned, but at outside left. Prior to this the City had established a two-goals lead, a success which was well merited, although Charlton looked a very smart team in the first half. Webb again played well for the City, and appears to have found his best position at centre-half. Miller was a cool and clever defender throughout, and it is good to see this fine player back in the form which has won him countless admirers during his years at Exeter.

Exeter City. Davies; Gray and Miller; Clarke, Webb, and Hardie; Scott, Wrightson, Whitlow, Houghton, and Hurst.

Charlton Athletic. Wright; Smith and Oakes; Harris, Turner, and Jobling; Butt, Blackwell, Prior, Boulter, and Hobbis.

Charlton met with a set-back at St James's Park in more ways than one, for the City, after an anxious first half in which Charlton were the better team, staged a fine recovery after the interval to score two goals without reply. Furthermore, they lost their goalkeeper in a collision with Hurst, although Smith, who took over, surprised the crowd by his cleverness in an unaccustomed position. He saved quite brilliantly on several occasions, and especially when Scott fired in a rasping cross-shot to which he fell and turned round the post, an instant before Whitlow could move in and apply the finishing touch. With Wright returning to the field but taking up the outside left position Charlton now exploited the offside trap to advantage, but they were aided by a number of bad decisions on the part of the referee. The official was notably at fault on one occasion when Exeter beat their defence and Whitlow was in a legitimate position, going on to score a third goal, only to have the point disallowed for offside by the referee, who wrongly pulled him up. Exeter continued to attack strongly in the closing stages, but their forwards did not press home their advantage against the weakened Charlton team, and Houghton shot feebly over the bar. Exeter's goals were scored by Wrightson and Hurst. The attendance numbered 5,000.

LOVELL'S ATHLETIC 3
EXETER CITY RESERVES 2.

In today's Western League match at Newport the City Reserves set up a fast attack in the opening minute, and Weare saved from Risdon. Pressure was maintained, and there was every likelihood of Exeter taking the lead when Purvis beat the home defence, but hesitated in front of goal, We are coming out to dispossess him. It was instead Lovells who took the lead, after twelve minutes. An innocent looking centre from Hardwick went to Jones, whose shot was helped into the Exeter net by S.Barnes in attempting to clear. The unexpected reverse warmed up the City, and the Lovells goal was subjected to a steady bombardment, everything being dealt We are, however. with by Macgill increased Newport's lead with a header a few minutes before the interval.

Second Half.

With Weare in brilliant form the Lovells goal bore a charmed life in the second half, until the City's persistence resulted in being scored by Purvis. 8 goal Play then evened itself out, and Hardwick placed Lovells further in front, to which Exeter replied with a goal by Boundy.
