Match 28
27th January 1934
Bournemouth (a)

Saturday, January 27th 1934.
BOURNEMOUTH AND BOSCOMBE 1 EXETER CITY 3.

Exeter City dropped a bombshell when they selected the team to play at Bournemouth. Arthur Davies, the captain and goalkeeper, was left out of the side for the first time for three years, and his place was taken by Chesters, secured from Manchester United on the eve of the present campaign. Chesters has shown consistently good form in the Reserve side, and he has gained his chance with the "Chiefs" as the result of Wednesday's Southern Section Cup-tie, in which Davies was beaten six times by the Crystal Palace forwards. The captaincy of the side was given to Clarke. Another interesting feature was the inclusion of Stan Barber, who was making his first appearance since last May. Fortunately there is every indication of his having recovered from the puzzling illness which had kept him out of the game for so long.

Bournemouth and Boscombe. Coen; Proctor and Randle; Miller, Coxford, and Farrow;Friar, Fletcher, Littlewood, Chalmers, and Russell.

Exeter City. Chesters; Gray and Miller;
Clarke, Webb, and Barber; Scott, Wrightson, Whitlow, Houghton, and Hurst.

Referee:- Mr E.G.Walliker, of Salisbury.

Exeter City were the more impressive side and were good value for their win at Dean Court. Losing the toss, they settled down quickly although playing against the wind and sun, but Hurst missed an easy chance provided by Whitlow. Unfortunately for Bournemouth they lost the services of Coxford, who was kicked in the face while heading the ball after fifteen minutes' play. Coxford resumed at outside-left, with his head heavily bandaged, a few minutes after the change of ends. In a few more minutes Exeter took the lead, Wrightson tapping the ball home from a couple of yards from a splendid centre by Hurst, the ball keeping low as it travelled across the goalmouth. Littlewood replied for Bournemouth from Russell's pass ten minutes later, and this was the prelude to a series of heavy attacks on the City goal, which had two or three narrow escapes. The "Cherries" tired, however, towards the finish, and the Grecians, taking full advantage, added two further goals through Wrightson and Scott in the last ten minutes. This was the City's very first League victory at Bournemouth, but it has to be admitted that the injury to Coxford put the home side under a severe handicap.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 3
TORQUAY UNITED RESERVES 1.

The "fifth test match" of the series between the reserves of Exeter City and Torquay United saw the "rubber" already in the keeping of the South Devon club, for they had won three out of the four games previously played this season. There were only 500 spectators.

City Reserves:- Davies; Lock and Hughes; Angus, Childs, and Hardie; F.Jasper, Risdon, Boundy, Barnes, and Welsby.
Torquay Reserves:- Langford; Davies and Brown; Hewitt, Grice, and Flavell; E.E.Knott, Lievesley, Mills, Harker, and Hutchinson.
Referee:- Mr F.W.Yendle.

Following a corner on their right Torquay gained the lead after five minutes' play, Lievesley shooting through at close range from the flag kick, taken by Knott. Exeter's defence was none to sure with its kicking, and Davies once had to clear with a flying kick when Hughes had completely missed the ball. Playing towards St James's Road in the second half Exeter improved greatly, and Childs scored a lovely goal with a fierce shot from outside the penalty area. Then Jasper, from a pass by Barnes, beat Langford to put the City ahead, and Risdon with a first-time shot from Boundy's pass, added the third goal. Welsby received an injury to his leg and limped off five minutes before the finish.
