Southern Section Cup 2nd Round
Exeter City v Watford

SOUTHERN SECTION CUP SECOND ROUND.

Wednesday, February 21st 1934.

EXETER CITY 4 WATFORD 2.

Several changes had to be made in the City team for the Southern Section Cup-tie against Watford at St James's Park on Wednesday afternoon, due to the indisposition of Wrightson. Wrightson's place was taken by Scott, with Angus coming into the team at right half and Clarke on the right wing.

Exeter City:- Chesters; Gray and Miller; Angus, Webb, and Hardie; Clarke, Scott, Hurst, Houghton, and Barnes.

Watford:- McLaren, Lewis, Moran, Findlay, Armstrong, Woodward Chapman, Irvine, Lane, Lowe, and Davies.

Watford, playing from the St James's Road end, did a lot of strong attacking at the start, but so well did Gray and Miller cover up that Chesters had nothing difficult to save. Then the City got into their stride, but Houghton shot weakly behind with only McLaren to beat. Clarke ran into position to meet a long pass from Houghton and from close quarters banged the ball first-time past McLaren to give the City a lead which was scarcely deserved on the run of the play. In a quick breakaway Clarke dribbled from midfield, and outpacing the opposition ran on to beat McLaren with a powerful low shot. Exeter had nearly all the play after the interval, first Barnes and then Hurst scoring. Woodward and Irvine replied for Watford.
