EXETER CITY 1: CRYSTAL PALACE 2

24th February 1934

An experimental City team was beaten at St James's Park today by a Crystal Palace side which had also undergone several changes. Both sides were forced into the epidemic of changes on account of injury and illness. The teams were:

Exeter City:- Chesters; Gray and Miller; Angus, Webb, and Barber; Scott, Clarke, Whitlow, Hurst and Barnes.

Palace:- Dunn; Rossiter and Perry; Wilde, Haynes, and Finn; Harry, Turner, Rooke, Dawes, and Crompton.

Referee:- Mr A.Milsom, of Bristol.

Exeter should have won this match on their second half form alone, when the home side completely dominated the game and bombarded the Palace goal with shots from all angles, but were right out of luck. Even Gray went up with the attack and tried a shot at goal, the ball travelling just wide. Rooke and Dawes scored for the Palace in the first half, and Barber got Exeter's goal direct from a free kick in the closing minutes. There were 5,000 spectators.

Barry Town v Exeter City Reserves

Exonians Play Well. Profitable Visit To Barry

Giving a remarkably good display of football , Exeter City Reserves fully deserved their 3-0 Southern League victory over Barry in South Wales. The side always showed the more balance, and, with the half-backs exercising a relentless grip upon the play, Barry's attack was rendered negligible. Childs freely distributed the ball to his wings, and quite early Exeter went ahead when Jasper, putting a centre across, Flood accepted and scored with a good shot. Exeter's forwards were always the more speedy and resourceful, and, with Jasper sending over further perfect centres, it was no surprise when after 30 minutes' play Purvis scored the second goal. The third goal came during the second half, Jasper crowning a great display by sending in a sho. which slipped through the goalkeeper's hands. Barry's best work was done in the closing stages, but though they frequently attacked Hughes and Lock were equal to all demands.
