READING 2 EXETER CITY 0

Reading included a new goalkeeper, Wildman, signed yesterday from Wolverhampton Wanderers. He replaced Whittaker, who stood down on account of injuries received in the match with Arsenal last week in the F. A. Cup. The weather was fine and there was a crowd of nearly ten thousand at Elm Park when Miller lost the toss and Poulter kicked off with the City facing a light breeze.

EXETER CITY

Reading had to fight very hard for victory against Exeter City at Elm Park this afternoon, and it was contrary to the run of the play that the "Biscuitmen" crossed over with a two goals lead. Reading never relaxed their efforts subsequently, and on the whole just about deserved to succeed because they were quicker on the ball and more penetrative in attack.

Angus played another great game in the City half-back line, and no fault could be found with the Exeter defence. Chesters, who was badly shaken up in one or two collisions with the Reading forwards, did exceptionally well under trying circumstances. Special interest was shown by the home supporters by reason of the first appearance of Wildman, from Wolverhampton Wanderers. He made a satisfactory debut, keeping his goal intact, and showing good anticipation and pluck in meeting oncoming forwards, and kicking strongly with his clearances. The match was also a big success for Chandler, who, deputising for Fielding at outside left, scored both his side's goals. The Exeter defence concentrated on marking Tait to such an extent that Butler and Chandler were given unusual opportunities. Butler fell below his usual form, however, and McGough was mastered by Angus before he could become really dangerous. Miller and Gray were ably backed up by Keefe in the City defence, and twice Gray kicked the ball from off the goal-line with Chesters beaten.

Friendly
EXETER CITY RESERVES v
EXETER & DISTRICT LEAGUE.

The Reserves tried out more amateurs in their friendly against the Exeter and District League at St James's Park this afternoon. They included L.J.Lucas, who has frequently assisted Wimbledon in their Isthmian League games, and H.R.Bamsey, a centre half who plays for Woodbury. R.Cozens, an inside left from Lyme Regis, is only 17.

City Reserves.
Davies; Lock, Smith; Dudley, H.R. Bamsey, S. Barnes; McArthur, R.Ebdon, L.J.Lucas, R.Cozens, J.Endacott.

Exeter and District League XI.
Ford (Budleigh Salterton); Hellier (Tiverton), Matthews (Ilfracombe); Johnson (Friernhay), Southcombe (South Molton), Blair (St Mark's); Long (St Luke's), Dunn (Southern Railway), Wakeham (Heavitree), Bluck (Dawlish), Parker (Barnstaple).

The Reserves set up a hot attack but the League defence stood up to it well. A penalty to Exeter was wasted, McArthur hitting the post from the "spot" and the rebound being sent over the bar.

Ebdon scored Exeter's first goal with a header from a corner taken by Mc Arthur. Endacott, Ebdon, and Lucas scored further goals, and at half time the City led by 4 to nil. Dunn got away on his own in the second half to score a neat goal, but McArthur (2) and Endacott scored for the Reserves.
