Match 35
10th March 1934
Norwich City (a)
Western League
Bath City (h)
Saturday, March 10th 1934.
The sensational news of the week was that Exeter City's star inside forward, Harold ("Happy") Houghton had been transferred to Norwich, and that his first match for his new club would be against his old one. So amid many rumours, denials, and counter-rumours Exeter City and Houghton have finally parted company after an association which has lasted close on six years, the player having been obtained from Everton in exchange for a transfer fee on June 14th 1928. The Exeter City club, who completed the transfer details on Thursday morning, have received a fee from Norwich and a reserve player, Smith, a full-back, in part exchange.
NORWICH CITY 1: EXETER CITY 1
Enthusiasm is running high in Norwich, and the East Anglian capital was badly smitten by football fever on the occasion of Exeter City's visit to the Nest today. The Norwich populace was divided between two topics of conversation. one being the outstanding promotion chance of the "Canaries," and the other the lightning mid-week transfer to them of Harold Houghton. The acquisition of Houghton by Norwich vested the match with nothing less than a piquant interest, and Norwich people were delighted that so talented a forward had been secured. They regarded it as a very convincing gesture of the manegement's earnestness to win the race for promotion, and there was a feeling that Norwich's gain would be Exeter's loss.
Norwich City. Wharton; Thorpe, Ramsay; Robinson, Halliday, Lochhead; Warmes, Burdett, Vinall, Houghton, Murphy.
Exeter City. Davies; Gray, Miller; Clarke, Webb, Angus; Scott, Wrightson, Whitlow, Barnes, Hurst.
Hopes ran high before the game that Norwich City, with the feeling of confidence inspired by their commanding lead in the Southern Section League table, would at last break their unenviable sequence, for in their previous four meetings Norwich City have failed to overcome the Grecians, who have won three of the four encounters. Norwich seemed conscious of the "bogey," for they opened with tremendous determination and dash only to run up against a rocklike defence. Halliday was prominent in the home half-back line, and was active in checking the rapid moves of Exeter, whose forwards, even without the genius of Harold Houghton, showed superior speed and ideas.
In the second half Norwich had more of the play and a greater number of chances, but failed to profit from their advantage until Burdett scored against the run of the play. Just as the "Canaries" saw visions of victory after the fifth time of asking Wrightson headed an equalising goal, six minutes from the call of time.
City Reserves. L.Ford; Hughes and Lock; Ditchburn, Childs, and S.Barnes; F.Jasper, Gumm, Boundy, Risdon, and A.Flood.
Bath City. Prout; Howson and Sambridge; Hall, Hicks, and Lloyd; Thomas, McMillan, Lewis, Jennings, and Willey.
Referee:- Mr F.C.Cook.
There were only three hundred spectators when Exeter kicked off and applied immediate pressure, although too often the ball was given to the opposition through faulty passing. Lewis with an amazing backward header from the edge of the penalty area, and McMillan, from close range, scored for Bath. Boundy then scored two goals for the City Reserves. Exeter were routed in the second half, Thomas doing the "hat-trick" and McMillan obtaining Bath City's sixth goal.
