CHARLTON ATHLETIC 1
EXETER CITY 0

The game between Exeter City and Charlton Athletic at the Valley failed to come up to expectations. The League leaders, who won by the only goal, played cleverly in the first half, but were nothing like as good after the interval, and Exeter had their chances to equalise had their forwards been sufficiently quick and enterprising. Defence was Exeter's strongest department, the forwards were below their best. Tierney was the cleverest attacker, and Scott the most effective. The weather was ideal for football, and the ground, as usual, was in perfect condition. Everything in fact pointed to a bright and stirring contest and another big "gate" for the Charlton club. The Charlton supporters, although realising that Exeter had defeated their favourites both in the League and the Cup this season, and shared the spoils at the Valley, nevertheless regarded promotion as a foregone conclusion, and would not hear of defeat today. The crowd numbered about 10,000 when the teams came out, Charlton in red and Exeter in white. Miller won the toss.

Charlton gained two valuable points in their strong promotion bid, but their display was of a disappointing character. Where Charlton failed to come up to expectations was in the inability of their intermediate line to arrive at any understanding with the attack. All three were good in defence, particularly Don Welsh, late of the Royal Navy and Torquay United, who played his best game for his new club, but they all lacked accuracy in their disposal of the ball. As a consequence Charlton's raids were mainly of an individual nature. Both Wilkinson and Allen were continuously ploughing a lonely furrow, but they were the life and soul of the team, and it was Wilkinson who in the thirtieth minute got the only goal. Allen scored a brilliant goal in the first few minutes of the game but was given offside. He was very unfortunate in not adding to the 28 goals he has already scored in the campaign, although he was closely shadowed by Webb throughout.

Western League
CITY RESERVES 2 BATH CITY 2.

Exeter City Reserves, who beat Tiverton in a friendly match at the Elms during the week, were at home today to Bath City for Western League points.

City: Davies; Lock, Smith; Keefe, H.Bamsey, Dudley; V.Hoyle, R.Ebdon, Hurst, McArthur, J.Endacott.
Bath: Prout; Carter, Sambridge; Hall, Hicks, Lloyd; Coward, Farr, Coombs, Prentice, Richards.

Exeter City Reserves lost no time in getting down to business. An attack led by Richards for Bath was repulsed and the ball swung to the other end, where Ebdon, receiving from Endacott, had Prout well beaten with a powerful drive. In a sudden Bath City attack Coombs outpaced Lock and landed the ball neatly in the Exeter net. Within a few minutes Davies was beaten again, although he ought to have been able to save. Coombs transferred to Farr, who lobbed an easy shot over Davies's head and into the net. Shortly after the change of ends Exeter drew level, McArthur, in the penalty area, coolly flicked the ball over to Hoyle, who gave Prout no chance with a beautiful shot from an angle. Exeter had the best of the remainder of the game but failed to add to their score mainly because Hurst was too slow.

EXETER CITY RESERVES v
YEOVIL AND PETTERS.

Southern League match at St James's Park.

Exeter City Reserves were very ragged and showed poor judgment in all departments against Yeovil on Wednesday afternoon, and were deservedly beaten by two goals to nil. Yeovil fielded nine members of the team which won a sensational triumph over Exeter City's first team at Huish in December.

City Reserves.
Davies; Lock, Smith; Keefe, H.Bamsey, S.Barnes; V.Hoyle, Dudley, R.Ebdon, McArthur, Dryden.

Yeovil and Petters.
Lynch; Woods, Birks; Smith, Price, Slade; Holbeach, Parle, Taylor, McNeil, Parkin.

Parle and Smith were outstanding for Yeovil in the early stages, and Holbeach was too fast for Smith (of Exeter). Exeter were aggressive in a crude sort of way but their forwards were poorly supported by Keefe and Barnes, and when chances did fall to them their shooting lacked direction and force. Ebdon, who passing at times was fairly accurate, headed narrowly over the bar from Hoyle's corner kick, but other attacks petered out very tamely. Yeovil's first goal was well executed, Parkin running ahead from McNeil's pass and shooting past Davies. A few minutes afterwards Holbeach ran through and passed to Parkin, who scored his second goal.

Final:- City Reserves 0 Yeovil 2.
