EXETER CITY 2....BRISTOL ROVERS 2

Exeter City threw away a point at St James's Park today, against Bristol Rovers. Four goals were divided after a contest that was hard and dour rather than clever. A typically gusty March wind, at times blowing directly from goal to goal, was bound to have an adverse effect upon the play. Miller lost the toss and Exeter lined up at the far end. There were less than 4,000 spectators present when play commenced.

The City were by far the more aggressive side in the second half, yet it was during this period that the Rovers scored their goals. Before the interval, when the City were playing against the wind, the game had been even, but afterwards Exeter so dominated things that they should have had a crop of goals. Chesters was an excellent goalkeeper in the first half, but was scarcely troubled afterwards. Miller was the better back, although he was covered by the better half-back, for Risdon fell away in the second half when he committed the old mistake of Exeter City half backs in wandering in towards the middle of the field. Poulter was an energetic leader of the attack, and Wrightson the cleverest of the forwards. Ten minutes before the interval the City ended an uninteresting spell by taking the lead. Following a wild clearance by Pickering the ball went into touch. The throw in was snapped up by Scott, who quickly transferred to Wrightson. Another good pass followed, and Poulter, darting between the backs, drove hard into the net from close range. Ten minutes after the change of ends McArthur, with a magnificent header from McNestry's centre, levelled the scores, but in the next minute Scott beat Ellis with a high curling shot from almost on the touchline.

The game in the second half continued to be a duel between Exeter City's forwards and Bristol's defence, and many excellent chances were missed, but with two minutes remaining McCambridge, Harwood, and Prout made a combined burst through, and McCambridge passed to McNestry, who with time to bring the ball under control scored the second Bristol equaliser.

Southern League match at Eastville, Bristol. There was a dramatic start, for inside half-a-minute Exeter took the lead. McArthur, in the centre of the field, gave Ebdon a perfect pass. Smith moved in to tackle but slipped, and Ebdon raced on and drove the ball just inside the post as Adams advanced to narrow the angle. The lead was not maintained, however, and after thirty five minutes Wildsmith put the Rovers on level terms. Five minutes later the lead was obtained for them by Havelock. Ten minutes after the interval Dudley equalised for Exeter after a dextrous dribble by McArthur. The game finished under the control of a linesmen, the referee having to retire with a bad cut over the eye caused by catching the full force of the ball at close range.
