Match 38
22nd March 1933
Third Division South Cup 3rd Round Replay
Coventry City v Exeter City

SOUTHERN SECTION CUP. EXETER CITY ENTER THE FOURTH ROUND.

Thursday, March 22nd 1934.

There was a small attendance at the Southern Section Cup replay at Coventry on Thursday afternoon. The "Bantams" were represented by the team that drew at Exeter, and for the Grecians Hurst appeared at centre-forward for Whitlow (injured), Risdon came in at inside right, with Wrightson and J.Barnes forming the left wing. Hughes partnered Miller at full-back.

COVENTRY CITY O EXETER CITY 1.

The match opened with a strong Coventry attack, Webb clearing from the goal-line and Davies kicking away a shot from Richards. Exeter moved up to a good position but could not break through the home defence, although Risdon tried hard. Hurst took a long pass by Angus only to be ruled offside. Pearson saved from Wrightson, and when Coventry transferred play to the Exeter end it was always Miller who intervened. A free kick to Exeter was taken by Miller, who sent the bar just over the bar.

SECOND HALF.

Exeter restarted in promising form, but in a sudden breakaway by the home forwards Bourton drove the ball in hard for Davies to make the best save of the match so far. Exeter replied with great determination, and a powerful shot from
Hurst sailed over the bar, to Coventry's relief. Exeter were distinctly on top in the closing stages, Barnes dashing through six minutes from the end to score the winning goal. Shades of 1931, when Exeter were held to a draw at home in the F. A. Cup and won the replay at Coventry!
