Match 39
24th March 1933
Third Division
Clapton Orient v Exeter City
Friendly
Budleigh Salterton v Exeter City Reserves

Saturday, March 24th 1934.

CLAPTON ORIENT 4
EXETER CITY 0.

Exeter City, fielding an unchanged side at Lea Bridge, decided that it was unwise to risk either Gray or Whitlow, both of whom had not quite recovered from pulled thigh muscles sustained recently. Hughes and Risdon, members of the team which succeeded in the replay of the Southern Section Cup-tie at Coventry on Thursday, continued therefore at right full-back and inside-right respectively. The Orient team included Fellowes, formerly of Plymouth Argyle and a native of Tavistock, and two famous ex-internationals, Halliday, formerly of Sunderland, Manchester City, and Arsenal, and Rigby, a member of the Blackburn Rovers team which came to Exeter on F.A.Cup business in season 1927-28.

Clapton Orient. Robertson; Keen and Crompton; Fogg, Fellowes, and Ware; Mayson, Mills, Halliday, Crawford, and Rigby.

Exeter City. Davies; Hughes and Miller; Clarke, Webb, and Angus; Scott, Risdon, Hurst, Wrightson, and J.Barnes.

Referee:- Mr J. Milward.

Heavy rain fell in London, and although it eased up before the kick off, the conditions were unpleasant. The pitch was waterlogged, and the surface treacherous. There were indications of a large crowd, despite the weather, and the spacious terraces around the ground were filling up rapidly when Clarke led out the Grecians. Owing to the similarity of colours Clapton Orient wore red and white hoops, and Exeter white shirts. Clapton Orient, by making the most of their opportunities, gained a really fine win over Exeter City, for despite the fact that the City had probably a greater share of the attack, their finishing was in nearly every case extremely poor. The Orient were the more impressive team right from the start, and many good movements were executed by Mills and Mayson, but it was not long before Exeter, with Angus and Clarke conspicuous in their providing the forwards with good passes, were enjoying a very fair share of the game.

Twelve minutes after the start Halliday gave Clapton the lead with a typical header from Mayson's centre. Rigby added the second goal with a first-time volley from a long crossfield pass by Mayson, and Halliday followed up with the third goal a minute later, sending a powerful low shot into the corner of the net. Halliday in the second half completed the "hat trick" with another fine goal, the final pass again being provided by Mayson, the most enterprising winger on the field, and the one winger in the Third Division that Miller has not yet been able to master. Exeter made the mistake of keeping the ball too close on the heavy ground, and this was their undoing.

BUDLEIGH SALTERTON V
EXETER CITY RESERVES.

As an acknowledgment of the services of Jasper and Ford, the City team gave Salterton a match today on the cricket field, and it was greatly appreciated by a large crowd of spectators. Boundy scored for Exeter after fifteen minutes, and Foyle, from a range of fifteen yards beat Chesters with a grand shot. Exeter in the second half scored through Childs direct from a free kick and Chapman, after a shot by Childs had rebounded from the goalpost.
Result:
Budleigh Salterton 1
Exeter City Reserves 3.
