EXETER MAKE A GOOD START TO HOLIDAY PROGRAMME

Good Friday Football

Friday, March 30th 1934.

BRISTOL ROVERS 1 EXETER CITY 1.

Exeter City made a happy start to their Easter holiday programme on Good Friday, the first-team drawing at Eastville, Bristol, and the Reserves defeating Bristol Rovers Reserves at St James's Park.

Bristol Rovers. Preedy; Pickering and Donald; Wallington, McLean, and Murray; McNestry, McCambridge, Havelock, McKay, and Taylor.

Exeter City. Davies; Gray and Miller; Clarke, Webb, and Angus; Scott, Wrightson, Hurst, Whitlow, and J.Barnes.

Referee:- Mr A.J.Jewell, of London.

The City's away point at Eastville represented a good performance, and the result of one goal each was an equitable reflex of a hard though not always scientific encounter. Defences held the mastery in a match which was contested at a rare pace, and the Exeter rearguard, with Miller in unbeatable mood, was once more in wonderful form.

SCOTT'S GOAL.

Exeter opened the scoring midway through the first half when, from one of many sweeping raids, Scott shot into the corner of the net, after Preedy had somewhat luckily intercepted a previous attempt. It was fitting that Scott should have succeeded in getting Exeter's goal, for taking the game through he was the biggest menace to the Rovers defence, and shared with Hurst the honours in the City attack. It was not until twenty minutes from the end that Bristol equalised through McKay, who gave Davies no possible chance with a close range shot from Taylor's excellent centre. Exeter, the faster team, were not so impressive as the Rovers in headwork, but there was little to choose between the sides in other phases of the game. The City had the better of the first half, but were handicapped after the interval by an injury to Whitlow, whose pulled thigh muscle troubled him so much that he was able merely to hobble about on the left wing. Davies, Gray, and Miller were strong units in the Exeter team, and Webb, though slow to get into his stride, played magnificently after the interval.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 3
BRISTOL ROVERS RESERVES 1.

W.H.Smith, the City's new back from Norwich City, delighted Exeter's supporters in his first appearance for the Grecians at St James's Park. He was a conspicuous figure in the reserve team which gained a smart victory over a strong Bristol Rovers side by three goals to one. Childs opened the scoring with a penalty, and Boundy, a forceful and also a very skilful leader, netted twice. J.Smith, the former Liverpool centre-forward, obtained the Rovers' only goal in the second half.
The match, in connection with the Western League, was attended by a crowd of 3,000 people.
