Grimsby Town (h)
'TEDDY BEAR' DOES TRICK

Exeter City 2 (Rowbotham (pen)Taylor)
Grimsby Town 1 (Lever)
Super Skipper Shaun Taylor came up with the perfect reply to criticism of his performance at Scunthorpe on Saturday by scoring a dramatic late winner for Exeter City in last night's Fourth Division clash with Grimsby Town at St James's Park.
Taylor, stung by manager Terry Cooper's "teddy bear" jibes about him after the col- lapse at Glanford Park, smacked an unstoppable injury time header past Grimsby goalkeeper Steve Sherwood from a corner by 21st birthday boy Scott Hiley.
"I thought we deserved to win. They didn't have many chances and they're supposed to be one of the best sides in the division," said Taylor.
"We get stick for not doing well away from home but there aren't many good travel- lers in this league and not many teams come here and do well. What the manager said after Saturday was fair enough but it's a team game and everybody has to do their share. His comments got us fired up and it worked out well tonight," he added.
Cooper echoed his captain's sentiments. "I wanted them to ram the words down my throat and I challenged them to do it before the game. I'm delighted that they have. They showed a lot of character. "In the first half we were all over them and I just sat back and enjoyed it. We were very fluent and penned them back and in the end thoroughly deserved the result." City's first half performance was full of patience and purpose with carefully constructed moves that forced Grimsby to defend in numbers.
Steve Neville was the main tormentor, twisting this way and that to initiate so many dangerous threats on Sherwood's goal. Brian McDermott and the irrepressible Chris Vinnicombe were also heavily involved in City's most promising attacks but it was Neville whose guile finally enabled them to take a deserved lead in the 27th minute. He tempted central defender Andy Tillson into a rash and clumsy challenge, giving Oxford referee Denis Hedges no option but to award a penalty which Darran Rowbotham crashed to Sherwood's right for his seventh goal in nine games this season. Full back Geoff Stephenson produced a fine tackle to deny Neville a certain second two minutes later when the influential Clive Whitehead and McDermott combined to set him up and the City striker shot over in the 40th minute when a great run from deep by Hiley presented him with an opening. Grimsby were clinging on for dear life with only a Gary Childs effort blocked by Vinnicombe to show for their limited attacking sorties until they snatched a shock 41st minute equaliser. It came from their first cor- ner after Taylor had headed off the line from former Eng- land forward Garry Birtles.
Centre back Mark Lever got in an unchallenged downward header which was deflected past the unsighted Dave Walter. Richard Dryden drew a fine save out of Sherwood as City threatened to regain the lead immediately, but after such an entertaining first half, things went downhill after the break. The match developed into a rather scrappy affair and it was Grimsby, growing in confidence all the time, who almost got the game's third goal in the 75th minute. Childs curled in a long range shot but Walter just managed a vital, fingertip touch to push the ball on to the post and Dryden thwarted Tom Watson as he went for the rebound.
Walter also had to save well at the feet of Birtles and the nippy Tony Rees burst through only to shoot wide as City faced their stiffest examination of the match. But after big Richard Young had replaced McDermott to change the focus of City's attack, the game swung back in their favour. In a rousing finale, Taylor had a header saved by the prostrate Sherwood when he had more time to make sure of his finish and Young had a header cleared off the line. It then seemed destined to be a draw until Taylor rose superbly at the near post to thump home that match-winning neader and lift City to fourth in the table.
