Match 10
22nd September 1979
Carlisle United (h)

Exeter City 1-2 Carlisle United

Scorers: Neville (pen)

Attendance: 3,409

Having had a mixed start to their Third Division season, with three wins and four defeats, Exeter City entertained Carlisle United at St James' Park. With two of those three wins being record- ed at home against Mansfield Town and Bury respectively, manager Brian Godfrey and his players were confident of another success, along with the crowd of 3,409. It was not to be however as the City slumped to a 2-1 defeat, Steve Neville netting the Grecians goal from the penalty spot. The Carlisle marksmen were Phil Bonnyman and Paul Bannon. Interestingly the visitors included a certain Peter Beardsley in their line up, a player who has to go on to greater things in the game, and currently at Newcastle United. The result left Exeter City in twentieth spot in the Third Division, whilst Carlisle were to be found four places higher.
