Match 15
17th October 1989
Rochdale (a)
TUESDAY 17th OCTOBER
ROCHDALE 1 EXETER CITY 0
This game was a torrid affair for the City fans who made the trip. All agreed that it was the worst League performance since Terry took over and the subsequent booing of the team at the end of the match was probably deserved. It really was a lack lustre display. Let's be fair, for the City away contingent to voice their disapproval in no uncertain terms, it must have been bad. City started well and Dryden and McDermott had good efforts on goal. Rochdale then took charge and a header, was missed right on the goal line whilst Willie Burns and Peter Ward had efforts saved by Dave Walter The winning goal had an element of farce about it. Ward whacked in a venomous shot, Walter couldn't hold it and it bounced off his chest. Of all the places it could have gone, it fell to the onrushing Holmes and he scored off Walter's body. City woke up a little, unfortunately Clive Whitehead got a bit too active and was sent off with 15 minutes left for a deliberate foul. Perhaps we've been spoiled in the past few months, but this was depressing stuff.
ROCHDALE TEAM
Welch, Goodison, Hill, Brown, Cole, Ward, Ainscow, Holmes, Elliott, Burns, Whellans.
CITY TEAM
Walter, Hiley, Vinnicombe, McNichol, Taylor, Whitehead,Rowbotham, Bailey, McDermott, Neville, Dryden.
SCORERS: 1-0 Holmes 67.
ATTENDANCE: 1,307 (60 City fans).
SENDING OFF: Whitehead 75.
GREAVSIE'S MAN OF THE MATCH:
Shaun Taylor.
