Sheffield Wednesday (a)
Rodgers pulls a cracker
Sheffield Wednesday 0, Exeter City 1
8th December 1979
This was Exeter City's bumper Christmas bonus. The cracker which striker Peter Rodgers pulled in the fifth minute, when he hoodwinked the Wednesday keeper with a lob from 25 yards, contained enough surprises to give City their first win in nine games.
Goalkeeper Ian Main was almost unbeatable while his crossbar came to the rescue when Ian Mellor tried a late headed equaliser.

SHEFFIELD Wednesday's home problems continued when they went down 1-0 to Exeter for what was Exeter's second away win this season. Wednesday were unchanged after their draw at Chester last week and looking for a win over a side who went into the game with only one away victory so far.
Wednesday were the first to show, with a longish shrow from Blackhall leading to a corner, from which Grans, at the far post, headed wide, but then Exeter showed their intentions by forcing back Wednesday twice, and after six minutes grabbed the lead. It was a goal out of the blue and made Wednesday's fallibility at home spring to the surface once again When the ball was knocked down field, it was ROGERS who reacted, to put Exeter ahead with a shot with from about 18 yards range, and brought a frown to Wednesday
They attempted to strike back quickly with King being brought down when attacking down the left flank, and it was left back who showed Wednesday the way forward as they looked to get back is the came He produced clever skills in midfield to set Curran off on a run and a shot which forced Main to dive to his left to save. Exeter, though, were not approaching the came as though they had worries about being near the bottom of the table, and when Hore and Rogers combined. Wednesday needed Horesby, back in a defensive role to tidy up. Wednesday upped the tempo when Mellor escaped from his marker Phil Roberts down the left and when the ball was played in Wylde's low shot was blocked. That was something for Wednesday to work on but then Neville showed his trickery for Exeter down the right flank to underline that it was anything but an easy game for Wednesday at this stage. Rogers was looking sharp up front for Exeter and Delve, with a cross from the right which flashed across Wednesday's goal, showed that they were not content bo sit back as Wednesday, not piecing their game together failed to make as impact. A header by Curran which was narrowly over after Wylde had created the chance down the left gave them encouragement before Delve's work and there was funther pressure on Exeter's Defence when Curran and Porterfield combined for Porterfield to hit a low drive from over 20 yards range. but it was saved by Main at the expense of a corner. Wednesday were perking up a little and after Curran made a run from deep. Blackhall was brought down by Delve as he burst through menacingly down the right. Then came two incidents -one at either end which could have altered the course of the game. Wednesday fashioned an opening in which involved Mellor and Curran and a shot by Hornsby who blazed over Immediately Exeter broke down the left, Pearson burst into Wednesday's penalty area, crossed, and Wednesday were happy to see Smith boot the ball clear with Pearson appealing for hand ball.
Wylde was twice involved as Wednesday sought the equaliser and showed more urgency in their game. Hornsby and Blackhall linked up but when the full-back crossed, Wylde, in frent of goal, was unable to apply the finishing touch. Shortly afterwards, follow- ing a flick by Mellor. Main just beat Wylde to the ball. Exeter, getting players back behind the ball, were making if difficult for Wednesday and Rogers was elusive up front. A hopeful shot by Pullar from 25 yards ended wide before Wednesday forced Exeter back, only for King to shoot well over from just inside the area. after a comer, and then Mellor sent a cross from the left, but it was wide. Three minutes before half- time it looked as though Delce had been booked for what presumably was dissent , but Wednesday again searched in vain for the elusive goal. A header by Porterfield was punched away by Main and then Hornsby shot over fron 18 yards.

Wednesday's attempts to come back were against a background of Exeter looking sharp and dangerous on the break, but at the start of the second half. Wednesday set about their task in determined fashion. Pickering displayed this and it led to Hornsby combining well with Mellor but Main just beat Porterfield. to gather the ball, and a 20-yard shot by Blackhall ended inches wide of the near post as Wednesday attempted to keep Exeter defending. King shot over, and a low drive by Hornsby was blocked but in between those two incidents, Wednesday needed a firm interception by Pickering to cut out Neville's cross from the right. Smith twice shut out Rogers, who was looking a good player, and then Wednesday needed good work from Bolder to prevent them being in more trouble.
When Neville broke for Exeter down the right, it was a crucial situation for Wednesday but Bolder reacted well, diving to his right to save, amid applause. He was again involved clutching a cross from Delve as the game refused to turn any easier for Wednesday. Just past the hour Wed- nesday made a switch, with substitute Johnson replacing Porterfield, and soon afterwards they threatened, with Mellor fractionally failing to connect with Blackhall's cross as he stretched for it. The pattern was not there for Wednesday but they still plugged away, though Hornsby saw his free-kick headed away by Lee Roberts with Exeter determined not to give way. Pullar went close for Exeter before Curran was ruled offside when chasing a through ball from Mellor - and his reaction displayed Wednesday's frustration at the way the game was going. Hornsby shot over from the edge of the area, not the first time that had happened to the side, and then King saw his shot blocked. There were appeals for a penalty for Wednesday as Wednesday continued to show zameness but little else in their bid for the equaliser. Johnson, quickly involved, was off target when meeting a cross by Mellor from the left as the minutes ticked away for Wednesday, with Exeter looking to add, to their solitary away victory this season.
There were shouts from the fans for a penalty when Mellor went down, on a dav of disappointment for the supporters. Still Wednesday tried to crack open the Exeter defence a cross by Johnson caused difficulties for Main but Exeter cleared and then Main, moments earlier out of his goal, got back to save Curran's header. With seven minutes remaining it looked as though Wednesday had finally broken through but when King crossed from the left, Mellor's header hit the bar, and Exeter breathed again. A shot by Wylde led to a corner but Curran's kick was palmed away, one-handed, by Main.
