Match 48
10th March 1990
Grimsby Town (a)
Town storm to win
Grimsby Town 1-0 ECFC
Attendance: 6629
GRIMSBY TOWN stormed into fourth place in Division Four when they beat leaders Exeter City 1-0 at Blundell Park.
It was their third win in eight days and their fourth scalp against the division's leading sides, writes John Kirkby. Town ought to have had more than midfielder Dave Gilbert's 51st minute goal, well despatched after being sent through by striker Tony Rees. Midfielders Gilbert and Gary Childs caused havoc down the wings and striker Garry Birtles was outstanding in everything he did.
Forty four goal strikers Darran Rowbotham and Steve Neville were well held and Town keeper Steve Sherwood was never extended.
