Match 54
2nd April 1990
York City (a)
MONDAY 2nd APRIL
YORK CITY 3 EXETER CITY 0
Oh dear! City's smallest away following since November were rewarded with the worst display of the season, against a York side without a win for eleven games.
After the disappointment at Edgar Street two days earlier Terry decided to play three central defenders, as well as Hiley and Kelly. While offering some stability at the back City showed nothing at all up front, with Richard Young probably playing his worst game in a City shirt and Ben Rowe nothing like his usual self.
The first half was very dull, the only chance being a shot just over the bar from Shaun Reid. The second period though was an even bigger let down for the travelling faithful, very quiet except for a noisy bunch in the stand. Within sixty seconds of the restart Tony Barratt had netted, after Kevin Miller had done well to keep out a Steve Spooner shot but had failed to hold it.
We were kept entertained by Jim McNichol shortly afterwards. A long through ball looked to have set lain Dunn free, but Jim caught it, then expressing his suruprise at the referee's decision, motioning that he had headed the ball. All I can say is that Jim must have the stickiest head in football, as the ball was attached to him for a couple of seconds!
The last twenty minutes were far more entertaining for the neutral observer, but a nightmare for us. On seventy-two minutes Tony Canham chipped Miller after Spooner had seen his effort blocked by Tom Kelly and then lain Dunn crossed for lan Helliwell to head home with five minutes left. The sum total of City's attacking contribution was a decent effort by Danny Bailey and another from Scott Hiley. This seems to show that Terry's experiment of changing the team for away games will not work, City were stuffed by a side who were far less impressive than a good deal of other sides we have played this season. Yes, incredibly, this was the only occasion in which City have lost by more than one goal this season.
