Match 44
12th April 1934
Exeter City v Brighton & Hove Albion

SOUTHERN CUP SEMI FINAL. CITY MEET BRIGHTON IN LONDON.

 Thursday, April 12th 1934.

Torquay United having beaten Norwich City yesterday at the Arsenal ground, there were prospects of an all-Devon final in this first season of the Southern Section Cup, and this was an encouragement to Exeter City in their match with Brighton this afternoon, played on the ground of the Fulham club, at Craven Cottage. The weather was gloriously fine, but a gusty wind blew across the ground from one corner to the other. Apart from this the conditions were ideal, and the pitch was the best Exeter City have played on throughout the season.

Exeter City. Chesters; Gray and Miller;
Clarke, Webb, and Angus; Scott, Risdon, Hurst, Wrightson, and Whitlow

Brighton. Webb; Marsden and King; Wilkinson, Mooney, and Walker; Jepson, Farrell, Short, Egan, and Wilson.

Exeter were soon attacking, and Wrightson from just inde the commer of the penalty area drove a yard wide. The keen wind handicapped the players of both teams, and the early exchanges were scrappy.

Six minutes after the start the Grecians took the lead. Whitlow with a long low pass to the goalmouth found Hurst, who although hustled by King drove the ball home. Egan equalised four minutes after the interval with a shot from Mooney's pass into the roof of the net. Result: Exeter City 1 Brighton 1. Half an hour's extra time had to be played, but nothing further was scored.

Attendance 3,221.
