Match 45
14th April 1934
ECFC v Aldershot

Saturday, April 14th 1934.
EXETER CITY 0 ALDERSHOT 0.
 A CITY XI NOT AVAILABLE

It seemed as though all the forces of unkind fates had conspired to plot against Exeter City today. An unprecedented large number of injuries was followed by other misfortunes, the latest being that Harold Webb's mother passed away yesterday. There was exactly a team of players who were unavailable to-day for various reasons, and it was a mercy that the Reserves were without a match.

On the injury list
LP Davies, twisted ankle;
Scott, swollen knee;
Welsby, groin trouble,
Wrightson, bruised shoulder;following, swollen knee;
Hurst, bruised shoulder;
Whitlow, pulled thigh muscle; J.Barnes, knee injury;
Poulter, convalescent following a serious illness; m Ditchburn and Webb, family bereavements.

The strangest assortment of players ever to wear the red and white stripes of Exeter City in a serious match therefore turned out at St James's Park to face Aldershot this afternoon. They were: -

Exeter City
Chesters, goal;
Gray and Miller, backs;
Angus, Childs, and Hardie, half-backs;
F.Jasper, Clarke, Boundy, Risdon, and Smith, forwards.

Aldershot were on velvet by comparison, having to experiment in one position only. That was at outside left, where LeMaitre, who has played for the British Army, was given a trial. Dismal weather was in keeping with the sorry circumstances in which the Exeter club had been placed, and the spectators numbered less than 4,000. No goals were scored, but Exeter at full strength, and with the men in their proper positions would have beaten Aldershot easily. Childs showed in this match that he is far from being a spent force, and Boundy led the attack with dash. Miller, although not enjoying complete fitness following his injury, was his usual capable, cool, and confident self.
