SOUTHERN SECTION CUP: SEMI FINAL REPLAY.

Monday, April 23rd 1934.

At St James's Park:
Exeter City 1 Brighton 1.

Exeter City's Southern Section Cup semi-final with Brighton & Hove is taking the form of a long drawn out serial, and it is feared now that the third instalment at Brighton next Thursday may not have the traditional happy ending so far as the Grecians are concerned. On Monday evening, at St James's Park, the two teams met for the second time, and again the rivals found it impossible to arrive at a definitive conclusion. Extra time was played and an exciting though not scientific encounter ended in semi-darkness with the one goal all. score at

Exeter City. Chesters; Gray and Miller;
Clarke, Webb, and Angus; Scott, Risdon, Hurst, Wrightson, and J.Barnes.

Brighton. Webb; Marsden and King; Wilkinson, Mooney, and Walker; Jepson, Farrell, Brown, Smith, and Wilson.

The goals were scored early in the game. Brighton were the first to impress, and the crowd, numbering about 5,000, was given a shock ten minutes after the start. Potter-Smith, a clever footballer, though now in the veteran atage, deceived the home defence by passing wide to Wilson, his left wing partner and also a veteran. Wilson sent in an excellent centre which Brown headed into Exeter's net. Spirited attacks by Exeter quickly restored equality, for Wrightson gave Hurst the sort of pass the Tipton man thrives on, and Hurst in a twinkling shot low into the net beyond the reach of Webb. Exeter, however, will have to show better attacking ideas to finally win.

EXETER CITY v BRISTOL ROVERS,
AT BRIDGWATER.

Considering that they were compelled to field a reserve eleven in view of the Southern Section cup-tie Exeter City did very well to run a strong Bristol Rovers side to an odd goal in a friendly match which was played at Bridgwater on Wednesday evening, in aid of British Legion funds. About 2,000 spectators watched an enjoyable game in which the two sides revealed much cleverness. Childs opened the scoring with a hefty drive from some distance out, and it was not until after the interval that Taylor headed through for Bristol from McNestry's centre. The Rovers obtained the winning goal five minutes from the end, Hope scoring. Davies is credited with a great display in the Exeter City goal.
