CITY WIN CUP MARATHON: ODD GOAL DECIDES.

Thursday, April 26th 1934.

Brighton and Hove Albion 3
Exeter City 4.

Defeating Brighton and Hove Albion in the second replay of the semi final for the Southern Section Cup at Goldstone Road, on Thursday evening, Exeter City qualified to meet Torquay United in the final of the competition at Home Park, Plymouth, next Wednesday.

It was not until the closing minutes of a fast and exciting match that this Soccer marathon was won by Exeter. Indeed, there semed to be every prospect of another bout of extra time when Wrightson beat the Brighton goalkeeper to notch what proved to be the winning goal. It was the most exciting match seen on the Brighton ground for many years. The teams were again very evenly matched, and so swiftly were attacking moves engineered that first one and then the other goal was in danger. The play veered from end to end with lightning rapidity, and the spectators were aroused to the highest pitch of enthusiasm.

POULTER'S COME-BACK.

Exchanges were associated with all the grim earnestness so typical of the cup contest, but there were in addition numerous examples of clever combination, first by one side and then the other. Poulter staged a great come-back. Operating in his first important match since his unfortunate illness he was one of the City's stars of the evening, and his scoring of two goals paid high tribute to his opportunism. But the man of the match was Harold Webb. He was the complete pivot of strong and relentless defence and thoughtful of the needs of his colleagues in the front rank. Other Exeter stalwarts were Chesters, Gray and Miller, of the defence, and Hurst and Wrightson, of the forwards.

INSPIRED FOOTBALL.

Both sides opened in determined style, and ten minutes after the start Brown, gaining possession from Thompson, ran through on his own to score a brilliant goal. Eventually Poulter levelled matters, and the teams retired at half-time each having scored one goal. Fifteen minutes after the restart Hurst drove through from close range, and then Exeter played inspired football, Poulter in another ten minutes scoring their third goal. Brighton next had their best period of the game, Brown scoring a goal which the City contested on the grounds that the ball had not entered the net. After Brown had levelled the scores with his third goal a ding - dong struggle ensued until Wrightson's goal put Exeter through to the final.

EXETER CITY 5
NOTTS COUNTY 5.

Goals were ten a penny at St James's Park on Monday evening, when Exeter City and Notts County each scored five times in the match arranged for "Jock" Ditchburn's benefit. The game was quite interesting as an exhibition and there were many neat moves, although neither team went "all out." The County were very clever in attack, and their passing and positioning were above the class usually seen in Southern Section matches. The Notts players appreciated the value of moving before, and not after, the pass was delivered, and so their method of advancement was less laborious. Two of their best forwards were Varley, who got his place in the side because Mills was injured, and Riley, short in stature, but clever in possession and a whole-hearted worker.

QUICK GOALS.

Riley scored the first goal when he took advantage of hesitation on the part of Exeter's defence and bundled the ball into the net from Varley's centre. Notts threatened to overwhelm the City, and two quick goals rewarded their skilfully engineered raids. Elliott scored the first of these with a great first-time shot, Macartney following suit with a similar effort. Three goals in arrears, the City kept pegging away, and at length Wrightson reduced the lead with a glorious shot which Knox partly stopped but could not hold. Risdon then scored for Exeter with a header and Riley got another goal for Notts. In the second half the fifth goal for Notts was obtained by Varley, and in a late burst of scoring Hurst, Scott and Wrightson each found the net.
