Match 49
28th April 1934
Exeter City v Northampton Town

Saturday, April 28th 1934.
EXETER CITY 0
NORTHAMPTON TOWN 2.

Conquerors of Exeter City in the F. A. Cup, Northampton Town came to St James's Park with a considerably weakened team today. They included no fewer than five reserves, and Wells, the outside left who did nearly all the damage when the sides met in the Cup, was a notable absentee.

Exeter City made a number of changes. Several players were rested in view of next Wednesday's Southern Section Cup Final, and Clarke missed his first match of the season. Barber was reintroduced into the half back line, while Whitlow, Risdon and Welsby were found places in the attack. Gray captained the team.

Exeter City. Chesters; Gray and Miller; Angus, Webb, and Barber; Scott, Whitlow, Hurst, Risdon, and Welsby.

Northampton Town. Allen; Bennett and Dawes; Warren, McGuire, and Davies; Mitchell, Dowsey, Wheeler, Tolland, and McAleer.

Referee:- Mr A. S. King, of Swindon.

Exeter City, losing at home to Northampton by two goals to nothing, gave their worst display of the season, and the impression could be gained that there was no bonus on the end of the game, so casual and half-hearted were some members of the team. The attack was far from being good enough, and although chances came their way they failed to profit from any of them. McAleer obtained Northampton's two goals, one in each half. The Cup Final broadcast had an adverse effect upon the attendance, which was only just over two thousand.
