Match 51
5th May 1934
Torquay United (a)

Southern League
Barry Town (h)

Saturday, May 5th 1934.
TORQUAY UNITED 0
EXETER CITY 2.

The last match of the season, at Plainmoor, Torquay, was shorn of the glamour and excitement usually attaching to such clashes, with local rivalry at stake. It was the quietest Devon Derby anyone could remember, the reason for the public's detached attitude not being difficult to deduce. The game was fixed on a date which was altogether unsuitable, and people outside official circles will find it difficult to see the wisdom of arranging a Derby match on the season's last day. Furthermore, the mistake by the person responsible for compiling the League fixtures resulted, in this case, in a financial loss to the Torquay club, the "gate" being below four thousand. As regards the play, Exeter won by two goals, both obtained by the dashing Stanley Hurst, one at each end of the ground. In between Hurst's goals Barnes netted the ball only for Mr Lewington to rule it offside. The Exeter team, who made the short journey by motor coach, was the same as defeated the Magpies in the Southern Section Cup final at Plymouth on Wednesday, while Torquay replaced Tapp by bringing in T.J.Davies for his first appearance in the League.

EXETER CITY RESERVES v BARRY

The visit of Barry to St James's Park, which brought to a close the City Reserves' campaign in the Southern League, was of particular interest owing to the inclusion in the home side of two newcomers on trial from South Wales. They were Morgan, right half back, and Rogers, inside left. Jasper and Boundy scored for Exeter in the second half after Barry had secured the lead through James before the interval. The two newcomers from Wales were not much in the limelight
