EXETER CITY 1
TORQUAY UNITED 1
Exeter City failed to end a run of non-success against Torquay at the Devon Southern St James's Park this afternoon. The meeting of Section clubs ended in a draw of one goal each, and the result did justice to two teams who never rose above a moderate standard. A slight drizzle just before the match was insufficient to improve the state of the ground, but enough to keep many people away, and the gate, which numbered 4,000, must have been the smallest for a Devon Derby since professional football came to the South-west.

The City were at their best in the opening thirty minutes, after which they showed in their play their old failing of hesitancy and inability to anticipate the next move, whether their own or their opponents and Exeter's slow thinking had the effect of making the Magpies appear the speedier team. Torquay certainly went for the ball first time, and played with a great deal of dash and determination regardless of what they lacked in skilful manipulation of the ball.
From a scientific standpoint, however, the game must rank as yet another episode in a season of great disappointment to the Exeter following. Torquay, who have been enjoying one of their best and most profitable seasons, made a number of sweeping alterations from the eleven which just scraped through against lowly Newport County a week ago. All departments except goal were affected by the reshuffle, and the United selectors experimented boldly when they chose Hunt, a young player with no previous experience in the first team, to play centre half. Evidently the United directors have been troubled over the pivotal position following the move of Don Welsh to Charlton Athletic. Millington and Flavell were both given a chance but neither one filled the bill to the club's satisfaction.
Both the goals in today's match were scored in the first half, by McArthur for the City in 13 minutes with a powerful header from a ball from Scott which was deflected by Maggs to the City winger, and by Flavell for Torquay two minutes from the interval. Flavell followed up a long straight-ahead pass by Hunt and shook off the attentions of Webb and the backs before beating Chesters with a shot which entered the net just below the crossbar. Flavell had on an earlier occasion got the ball into the Exeter net, but the goal was disallowed on the grounds of offside.

The junior Devon Derby at Plainmoor in connection with the Southern League also ended in a draw, each side scoring two goals. Torquay were quicker on the ball but Milton lost a good chance by shooting wide when put through by Davis, and in another fast raid Walters shot straight at Davies, who cleared easily. At length Ebdon scored for Exeter and Knott for Torquay. Feeling crept into the game after the interval, and a section of the crowd demonstrated against Clarke when he was considered to have fouled Knott. That feeling was revived again when Ebdon restored the lead to Exeter, the home players protesting that the goal was offside. Hutchinson levelled the scores with a penalty kick. The City team was: - Davies; Lock and Smith; Clarke, H.R.Bamsey, and S. Barnes; V.Hoyle, Scott (T), R.Ebdon, Dudley, and J.Endacott.
