Eastertide Soccer
WATFORD v EXETER CITY
Good Friday, April 19th 1935.

If not exactly an impressive victory, Exeter City's one goal to nil win over Watford at Vicarage Road was a very good start to the Easter holiday programme. The Hertfordshire team were below their usual form, and the play was often poor, due in no small measure to the heavy state of the ground.

Watford. McLaren; Brown, Lewis; Findlay, Woodward, Davies; Rattray, Barnett, Lane, Lowe, McPherson.

Exeter City. Chesters; Gray, Miller; Risdon, Angus, Clarke; J.Scott, Wrightson, Poulter, McArthur, Tierney.

Referee:- Mr J. M. Wiltshire, of Sherborne.

Poulter scored the City's winning goal after 33 minutes of fairly even play with a fast low drive which McLaren's full length dive was just too late to intercept. The Exeter backs were rather shaky under pressure, but Chesters was in fine form and brought off several great saves. In the second half Watford exerted heavy pressure, and the Exeter forwards were forced to drop back to assist the hard working defence. Watford were unlucky to lose. They made the mistake of keeping the ball too close, whereas the City when given the chance to attack opened the game out as much as possible. Tierney was the best of the Exeter front line, his trickiness in advancing with the ball and his accurate centres making him a constant threat to Watford.

EXETER CITY RESERVES v
TAUNTON TOWN.

At St James's Park Taunton never had a "look-in" against Exeter City Reserves, who showed fine combination and quite deserved to win by seven goals to nil. Exeter did much as they pleased. Given plenty of chances by the fine constructive play of Webb the forwards had a shooting practice during the greater part of the game, and had not Brown, Taunton's goalkeeper, been in form the score would easily have mounted to double figures. Ebdon played a clever and enterprising game at centre forward. In addition to scoring four goals he narrowly missed on several other occasions. Exeter's all-round superiority is best illustrated by the fact that it was not until a minute before half-time that Davies touched the ball, and even then it was only to take a goal-kick.

Exeter's scorers:- Ebdon 4, Dudley 1, Webb 1, Sutherley 1.

  • ANOTHER MILLER.
Charlie Miller's younger brother was honoured last week by being selected to captain Scotland in the junior international against England.
