Third Division
Crystal Palace v Exeter City
And the Reserves
Torquay United Res. v Exeter City Res.

Saturday, April 20th 1935.

CRYSTAL PALACE 0
EXETER CITY 1

Crystal Palace, who scored seven times against Swindon yesterday, found the Exeter City defence a different proposition at Selhurst Park today, and the City won by a goal scored in the first half. The Palace sharpshooters, with R. Rooke of Guildford in the place of Albert Dawes at centre-forward, were held in complete subjection, and the City scored their second successive victory in two days on foreign soil.

There was a remarkable change of form at Selhurst Park, where the Palace, after scoring seven goals against Swindon yesterday, and six against Newport County last week (not to mention six against the Grecians at St James's Park in January!) suffered defeat by a goal to nil. Exeter owed their success almost solely to the brilliant work of their defenders. Chesters produced a magnificent display in goal and received capital support from that grand pair of backs, Gray and Miller, while Webb, who was in wonderful form at centre half, gave the burly R.Rooke no scope at all. In the first half Crystal Palace with Andrews and Carson combining well on the right wing played excellent football, and Exeter were in luck's way when in a sudden breakaway Poulter put in a strong cross-shot which Owens tried to clear, but only succeeded in kicking the ball into his own net. This unexpected goal acted like a tonic to the Grecians, for the whole team from that point onwards rose to the occasion, and with quick and sure tackling completely upset the Palace combination. Late in the game Dunn twice had to run out to smother shots from Poulter, who simply refused to be dominated by Wilde. J.Scott, who played inside right with "Nobby" Clarke on the wing, and Poulter, were enterprising members of an Exeter attack which played much better than in recent matches.

TORQUAY UNITED RESERVES 3
CITY RESERVES 1.

Clifford Sutherley, the sixteen-year-old Chudleigh amateur, was at outside-left in the City second eleven at Torquay today. Langford confidently gathered a low drive from Barnes, who went through on his own, and then the home side retaliated, Millington driving powerfully into the goalmouth and Knott, following up, at speed, connecting with the ball and bringing Davies to his knees. Exeter lost Dudley, injured, midway through the first half, and in thirty-two minutes Torquay took the lead through Walters, the ex Grecian, who shot past Davies as the goalkeeper advanced. Hurst made a brilliant run from the half-way line right into the Torquay penalty area, where he finished up a rousing drive which Langford parried at full length. In the second half Davies saved in masterly fashion from Knott and then Kerr passed along the turf for Walters to rush the ball into the net from close quarters. Dryden scored for Exeter and Davis for Torquay. Langford made the best save of the afternoon, jumping up and punching a flying shot from Dryden over the bar.

  • THE DEVON SENIOR CUP, FINAL TIE. Played at St James's Park, Exeter.
For the first time in the history of the competition, which began in the days when there were no professional clubs in the south of England, the Devon Senior Cup Final, which took place today on the Exeter City ground, St James's Park, featured no West Devon team.
The finalists this season were Friernhay and Bideford United, and considerable interest attached to the game, both clubs bringing a good number of supporters. The sides were:

Friernhay: W.H. Godbeer; R. Penn, L.Liddle; A.Johnson, D. Allison, J.Radford; R.Palfrey, F. Thorne, L. Burrows, H.Thomas, R. Erredge.

Bideford: C. Turner; L. Tythecott, Kidwell; Mock, A.Shute, Cook; W.Burnett, C.Shute, G. Bromell, W. Parish, W.Nicholls.

After twenty minutes Friernhay opened the scoring, Palfrey giving Erredge a nice pass in the penalty area for the winger to net the ball at short range. Nicholls scored for Bideford in the second half, but the goal was disallowed on the grounds of offside. Turner distinguished himself with a spectacular save from a penalty kick for a foul on Erredge by Tythecott.

Result: Friernhay 1 Bideford nil.
