NEW EXETER CITY TEAM FAILS TO BLEND
Saturday, August 29th:
Notts County 3 Exeter City 1.
Exeter City's nearly new team lost their opening match at Notts this afternoon by three goals to one. They played like a side without understanding or method, apart from the early stages, and once Notts had scored the first goal no doubt remained as to the eventual result. Some of the City's errors may have been due to the new players being unfamiliar with one another's style, but that does not explain the defeat away entirely. Notts were faster, cleverer, and more purposeful. They had the pull in every department except goal, where Chesters had six times more work to do than Blyth. Apart from Chesters, Stimpson and Urmson were the best players for Exeter. There were 10,000 spectators.
NOTTS COUNTY Blyth; Mills, Feebury; Corkhill, Wyness, Vasey; Ferguson, Chalmers, Smith, Shaw, Fallon.
EXETER CITY Chesters; Brown, Stimpson; Shadwell, Hobbs, Young; F.Smith, Scott, Johnson, McGill, Urmson.
Referee:- Mr A.A.Horwood, of Walton on Thames.
McGill scored for Exeter in the first minute, but the referee dis allowed the goal on account of the new rule concerning the charging of goalkeepers. Shaw and Ferguson scored for Notts (first half) and Ferguson obtained their third. Scott scored for the City.
