EXETER CITY v TORQUAY UNITED

Exeter City won the first of the "Devon Derby" matches of the new season. It was, however, a close call, for the Grecians had to defend desperately in the last few minutes to maintain their lead. The attendance was between eight and nine thousand.

THE SOUTHERN LEAGUE CUP
YEOVIL v. CITY RESERVES

Exeter started off as if they would overwhelm Yeovil, but good approach work was marred by the inability of the inside forwards to take their chances. Yeovil gradually settled down and a rousing struggle ensued.

YEOVIL Doncaster Attley Halliday Smith Payne Langford Whelan Burgess Mann Wyatt Slade

CITY RESERVES Tierney Boyle Croft Clarke Bamsey Burke C. Smith Miles Kerr Ebdon Johnson

Clarke completely subdued the Yeovil left wing, and Boyle was a great defender for Exeter, but Doncaster several times had the City defence in a tangle, only spoiling his good work by weakness in front of goal. Wyatt and Burgess were sound defenders for Yeovil, and Burgess with a surprise shot from forty yards opened the scoring.
Half-time: Yeovil 1 City Reserves 0.

Exeter started the second half strongly, but again their midfield work was spoiled by poor finishing. Clever combination between Attley and Doncaster gave Halliday an opening from which the old Scottish International scored Yeovil's second goal. Ebdon reduced the lead after Langford had punched out from Kerr. This success was short-lived, however, for Smith scored twice for Yeovil with shots that had Tierney beaten all the way. Exeter attacked again and Wyatt fisted out a certain goal, but the resultant penalty kick was brilliantly saved by Langford.
Result:
Yeovil 4 Exeter City Reserves 1.
