Plymouth Argyle v Exeter City

Exeter and District League
Exeter City Reserves v St Luke’s College

EXETER CITY v BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION.
Saturday, October 5th.

A drawn game in which six goals were shared was a fair reflex of the City's home match with Brighton and Hove Albion today. Giving an improved attacking display the Grecians commenced in great style, but a two goals lead was afterwards negatived on account of weak defensive play by Risdon and Angus. Brighton not only drew level, but took the lead before half time and it was not until five minutes after the resumption that the City equalised, through Ebdon, who thus crowned a very splendid game indeed. On the whole the City did better than in any match this season at St James's Park since Aldershot were here on August 31st. The local element, as introduced by Ebdon and Bamsey, did not let the side down. Ebdon showed coolness and resource, though he should refrain from working the ball across the field, and thereby allowing the opposing defenders to get back to cover their goal, while Bamsey defended grandly after the interval. When he acquires a shade more speed Bamsey will be a very good centre-half.

MCLEAN AND DUNN DROPPED.

Neither McLean or Dunn played for the City today. The dropping of these players, especially Dunn, caused a sensation among the City supporters, but the omission of these experienced players was not due to injury. Incidents have arisen behind the scenes which caused a breach, and both players are "dropped."

Exeter City:- Chesters; Gray, Miller;
Risdon, H. Bamsey, Angus; J.Scott, R.Ebdon, McCambridge, Clarke, McArdle.

Brighton: Mee; King, Martin; Darling, Stevens, Walker; Richards, Prest, Brown, Smith, Stephens.

Referee:- Mr A. J. Brown.

Exeter City's many changes had the effect of livening up their play immensely, and after seventeen minutes first Ebdon, then McCambridge, scored in quick succession.

Brighton's Reply.
After twenty-one minutes Brighton replied with two equally rapid goals by Stevens and Brown. With five minutes to go before half-time Walker gave Brighton the lead with a shot from outside the penalty area, Chesters being slow in getting to the ball. The half-time score, Exeter 2 Brighton 3, was disheartening in view of the City's early promise, but there were weaknesses at wing half-back, neither was Miller nor Chesters up to standard. The score was level again, however, eight minutes after the interval, Ebdon scoring for the City following an excellent individual effort in which he tricked both the Brighton backs and the goalkeeper before sending the ball into the net. The visitors attacked strongly towards the close, and with the goalkeeper out of position Gray made a timely clearance from the goal-line.

  • The match between St Luke's and the City Reserves is postponed until February 9th.

ARGYLE OUT CLASS EXETER CITY IN THE DEVON PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Plymouth Argyle 5 Exeter City 0.

No more than one thousand people were present at Home Park on Wednesday afternoon for the Devon Championship match between Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City. The City made one late change, Tom Scott coming into the side in place of Ebdon.

ARGYLE Cann Roberts Rae Gorman McNeil Gooney Grozier Smith Cookson Oxley Black

CITY Chesters Gray Lowton Risdon H. Bamsey Fantham J.Scott T.Scott McCambridge Dunn McArdle

There was little to choose between the sides in the early part of the game, which was almost featureless. Exeter relied on the open game and Plymouth attempted to make progress by the short passing method, but on the whole the respective attacks were easily held in check. The Argyle, although cleverer in their approach work, lacked a marksman, and when the City broke away J.Scott almost gave them the lead, shooting inches over the crossbar. Twenty minutes after the start Cookson headed a centre by Black low into the corner of the Exeter net. Twelve minutes later Cookson scored again, driving another fine centre from Black into the net at express speed. Three minutes from the interval Plymouth went further in front, Black meeting a pass when Oxley centred towards Chesters, and the goalkeeper, charged by Smith, appearing to knock the ball into his own net.
At half time the Argyle thus led by 3 goals to nil.

The City had received an object lesson after the opening fifteen minutes or so. They did not show anything like Argyle's understanding and were very slow to get into position. Lowton defended gallantly during the first half, and Dunn often introduced his brilliant touches, but apart from this there was little that can be said in favour of the Exeter team. The duel between Argyle's attack and the City's defence in the second half continued as it had in the first, and Cookson scored two more goals. Exeter packed their goal and came through without further loss, then in a breakaway McArdle forced a corner from which the ball was hooked into Cann's arms by Dunn.

Exeter and District League
CITY RESERVES v ST LUKE'S.
Amateurs Out-Played.

The City Reserves attacked from the start of their Exeter and District League match with St Luke's College at St James Park on Wednesday afternoon, and after five minutes Hurst scored. St Luke's hit back and just missed scoring. Instead, the City returned and Hoyle scored.

A raid down the left wing led to Endacott scoring for the City from Hurst's pass, and five minutes later Hurst scored again. St Luke's were game fighters but were out-played, and further goals for the Reserves were scored by Robinson, Hurst (3), and Hoyle.

Half-time City Reserves 9 St Luke's nil.

In the second half Hurst scored three more goals, and Robinson and Endacott one each.
City Reserves 14 St Luke's nil.

City Reserves:- Kirk; L.Brooking, Miller; S.Haller, Robinson, S. Barnes; V.Hoyle, T.Scott, Hurst, J.Endacott, "Bonso" May.
