Match 12
12th October 1935
Third Division
Queen's Park Rangers v Exeter City

Southern League
Exeter City Res. v Torquay United Res.

Saturday, October 12th.
QUEEN'S PARK RANGERS 3
EXETER CITY 1.

Until Exeter City acquire more craft and speed they will go on cutting a sorry figure, which they have been doing apart from one or two rare exceptions, all this season. Beaten by Queen's Park Rangers at Loftus Road the Grecians did not impress except for one short spell in the first half. They were never properly together and the old failing of slowness and faulty positional play was well in evidence. H.Bamsey has signed professional forms, but lost his place in the first team today, Robinson playing centre-half. The City nevertheless included two amateurs, Vic Hoyle, not very big in build, but a fast and thrustful right-winger, and R.Ebdon, who has never yet let Exeter down in any match in which he has so far played.

Rangers:- Mason; Carr, Russell; Allan, Bartlett, March; Lumsden, Fletcher, Cheetham, Lowe, Crawford.

CityChesters; Gray, Lowton; Clarke, Robinson, Fantham; V.Hoyle, Dunn, R. Ebdon, McCambridge, Hurst.

Referee:- Mr W. P. Harper, of Stourbridge.

The City fielded no fewer than five local products in Lowton, Clarke, Hurst, and the two amateurs, Hoyle and Ebdon. This was probably a record since the club entered the professional arena in 1908. Glorious weather prevailed, but the important counter attraction at near-by Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea and the Arsenal were playing, naturally affected the attendance, which at the start was about six thousand. The playing pitch at Loftus Road used to be regarded as just about the worst in England. Today it was looking in splendid condition, a tribute to the improvements which have been made to it in recent years. Queen's Park Rangers' stock fell badly against Exeter. It is of course true that they got both points, but their display was the poorest they have given this season. There was hardly a vestige of team work, and only some dashing and sparkling runs by Cheetham and a few effective centres by Crawford lifted the Rangers' attack out of the rut. Cheetham had a disappointing match. He worked like a Trojan, yet there was never a colleague ready to put the ball through to him in a takeable position. The best attacking work of the Rangers was done by the half backs. It was Allan's day indeed, and his terrific shooting was responsible for two of his side's goals. The Exeter attack was slow and ineffective. Hoyle and Ebdon, the two amateurs, and McCambridge, did some good work, but near goal the whole combination broke down, and Mason was never greatly troubled.

A SURPRISE ATTACK.

The Rangers should have made certain of the game during the first half, but their marksmanship was bad. It was a move between Lowe and Crawford that provided their first goal after play had been in progress for six minutes, Cheetham heading through the centre from Lowe. In thirty minutes a surprise attack brought Exeter's equaliser, Hoyle running the ball right up to the corner flag before centreing, and McCambridge running the ball into the net with the Rangers' defence all out of position. Two minutes later the Rangers were on top again, Allan banging in a shot from twenty yards which Chesters caught but carried over the line. Seventeen minutes after the change of ends Allan whipped another terrific shot which Chesters did well to stop, but failed to hold on to, and Cheetham, the ever-ready, merely had to flick the ball into the net.

CITY RESERVES v
TORQUAY RESERVES.

Southern League
match at St James's Park. McArdle shot outside the posts from a good position following a combined move between Barnes and T.Scott. After a spell of midfield play Torquay got going, and following clever play by Lowery, Protheroe and Davies the ball was put over the bar by Lowery.
Ten minutes of the second half had elapsed when Torquay took the lead. A shot by Howard was only partially blocked by Miller and the centre-forward, following up closely, regained possession. His second drive was right on target. J.Scott looked a likely scorer as he neatly took the ball past Green, but the hard-working Davies ran back and intercepted his shot. Tom Scott, with practically an open goal, shot wide from a couple of yards out.

Result:
City Reserves 0 Torquay Reserves 1.

Exeter Reserves:- Kirk; Brooking and Miller; Risdon, Bamsey, and Barnes; J.Scott, T.Scott, White, Taylor, and McArdle.
