BOURNEMOUTH & BOSCOMBE 1
EXETER CITY 1.

The weather at Bournemouth was fine, but a strong end to end wind made conditions difficult. Fortunately Lowton beat Jack Smith, the old Portsmouth and England International, when the two captains tossed for choice of ends, so the City at least started with the advantage of the breeze. There were about six thousand spectators.

The Grecians started in promising fashion but despite a couple of smart runs up the wing by Hurst and Hoyle their efforts came to nought. Bournemouth improved towards the interval and became much more dangerous in attack. Chesters saved brilliantly shots in quick succession by Riley, Chalmers, and Parris, and Riley scored a minute before half-time. Exeter's goal underwent a bombardment in the first ten minutes of the second half, but Chesters saved shot after shot in the most exceptional style. Exeter hit back in lively fashion and after play had been in progress for 25 minutes Scott equalised. In a scrambling finish Bournemouth made great efforts to gain the victory, but the City defence, with Robinson and Chesters outstanding, stood firm. Exeter City, sharing two goals at Bournemouth, accomplished the best away performance of the season. They were fully entitled to a point from a match, which considering the strong wind, was quite good from the football point of view. The Exeter defence played very well, with Chesters an outstanding figure, and the goalkeeper frequently saved the Grecians during one period in particular when Bournemouth attacked with great desperation. Robinson's height and powerful heading came in very useful in checking Riley, and he was the most prominent member of a good line of half-backs. The City attack showed great keenness, though the subtlety and craft of Dunn was missed, but despite their improvement and the gaining of a point Exeter are still anchored at the bottom of the League with only five points from twelve matches. Harry Poulter, who has been undergoing treatment for a stomach complaint, was discharged from hospital today, and is going to his home in Sunderland for a month's convalescence.

Southern League
CITY RESERVES v
ARGYLE RESERVES.

There were about two thousand spectators at St James's Park to witness the Southern League match between the reserves of Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle. Miller lost the toss, and the Argyle defended the St James's Road end of the ground.

City Reserves. Kirk; L.Brooking and Miller; Risdon, Bamsey, and S. Barnes; J.Scott, Dunn, McCambridge, McArthur, and McArdle.
Argyle Reserves. Davies; Milne and Wallace; Kirkwood, Hill, and Godfrey; Rich, Sloan, Melaniphy, Briggs, and Powell.

Melaniphy, fed well by his half-backs and wingers, was a threat to the home defence, and Bamsey had his work cut out. A fine piece of combination between McArthur, Dunn, and Scott ended with Dunn's shot grazing the crossbar. After twenty minutes Powell scored for the Argyle, and repeated the process almost on the stroke of half-time. Exeter, helped by the wind, attacked strongly after the change of ends, and a magnificent drive by McCambridge reduced their deficit. The Exeter leader beat three defenders and shot hard and low into the corner of the net giving Davies no chance. Briggs scored for the Argyle five minutes before the close, the final score being

SOUTHERN LEAGUE CUP TIE, FIRST ROUND.
ERRATIC TORQUAY ATTACKS DEFIED BY KIRK.

Exeter City Reserves 2
Torquay United Reserves 2.

For the first round of the Southern League Cup competition, at St James's Park this afternoon, strongly representatives sides were fielded by both clubs.

City Reserves: Kirk; L.Brooking and Miller; Risdon, Bamsey, and S. Barnes; J.Scott, Fantham, McCambridge, McArthur, and McArdle.
United Reserves: Langford; T.E. Davies and Green; Lievesley, H. Davies, Daniels; R.G.Davies, Lowery, S.W.Hunt, Hutchinson, and Dodds.

The City Reserves, with Barnes the most prominent player, had the better of the opening play and Langford saved a long cross shot from Scott. Later Fantham was fouled by Daniels close to the penalty area but Scott's free-kick rebounded for a corner, which came to nothing. Torquay subsequently had more of the game but poor finishing by Hunt and Lowery plus the clever goalkeeping of Kirk deprived them of any chance they might have had of taking the lead. Twenty minutes from the start McCambridge gave Exeter the lead from Bamsey's pass, then Hunt outpaced Bamsey to equalise. Kirk's brilliant goalkeeping saved Exeter more than once, then another shrewd pass by Bamsey enabled McArdle to score for the City. Erratic attacks by Torquay continued to be defied by Kirk after the interval, but eventually Hunt scored his second goal of the match.
