Match 06
16th September 1936
Reading v ECFC

Southern League
Exeter City Reserves v Dartford

Wednesday, September 16th.
READING 1 EXETER CITY 0.

For eighty out of the ninety minutes at Elm Park, Reading, Exeter City held Reading at bay on Wednesday evening, only to be beaten unluckily. One scoring attack after another was frustrated, Chesters, Boyle, and Stimpson holding the fort gallantly. Chesters was in fact the hero of the game. When it was over the crowd cheered him to the echo for a brilliant display, and he fully deserved it. When the Reading forwards did at last beat him it was in the nature of a lucky goal.

Eight minutes from the end Paterson put Tait through, and for the first time in the match Tait evaded Hobbs and got in advance of the backs. Whilst he was preparing to shoot, however, Chesters was on him, and he secured the ball, only to have it kicked away from him as he lay on the ground. It went to Watkin, who had no difficulty in placing it into the unguarded net. The attendance was 7,231, with receipts of £414.

Nearly all the constructive football came from Dartford, for whom Gardiner was a brilliant inside-left. He scored Dartford's second and third goals to crown a display of outstanding merit. Meads opened the scoring for Dartford and F.Smith equalised.
